Hey Alex congratulations!! btw is this only to study, or after you get done with school and all, you'll be able to apply for residency?

Let me know, because i might be interested on going too.

alex, thats sick man. congrats! we should get a drink whenever i come by alberta or whenever you come around the province im in... dreamers reunion in canada... hahaha

-one piece of advice though (based on my own experience):
when i left the states, i was given this information sheet while on the plane. it pretty much asked for your personal info: name, address, reason for visiting canada, country of citizenship.

when i arrived at the canadian airport, customs asked me what my status in the states had been since i had stated on the information sheet i was from somewhere else other than the country i flew from and my passport didnt have a us visa (passport was clean, but had canadian visa only).

i replied: i was a student

technically, i didnt answer the officer's question... but that was good enough... i guess... tried to control myself and seem confident...

now, remember that a canadian visa doesnt guarantee you will get a study permit... it is highly possible you will though, but immigration can still opt not to give you one at their discretion... thats why im giving you heads up and think about possible answers if you are asked questions about your status in the states... dont lie, but dont tell them the absolute truth either when not required.

i admire you brother for making such a decision. i know it must have been difficult to decide and leave parents/family as well as the whole application process.... but hey... we are adults (most of us here, i think)... and some day everyone will leave their parents... sooner or later... and you are coming here to further your education and better yourself...

i know some of us have made strong connections/ties in the states... but if this place doesnt allow you/us to move forwards... what do you do? certainly, you can wait... but how long are you willing to wait? time is something we wont be able to recover...

good luck to all of the other dreamer applicants here...

hope to meet you brother...

What providence will you be at?

and yes, I am aware that the immigration officer at the airport has the power to send me back or change the expiration date of my study permit. The best thing is to be calm and keep your answers honest and short

hope to meet you someday.

things are way more expensive here in canada than in the states. for example, a mcdonalds cheese burger usually costs $1 in the states... here, $1.69... 4 pieces of chicken nuggets in the states usually cost $1 and here $3.5

oh, and the canadian dollar is above the us one by like .05 right now

No, you gotta renew it in Canada, though it is not guaranteed they will, but most times they will do it . I dont know what are the steps to get a residency; I think you gotta live there for a couples of years before you can apply for that.

Hey Alex1234,
Congratulations on your success so far!! I have actually been looking at a Master's program at the University of Alberta, but I wasn't sure I could get a study permit till I heard of your success story. I have a few additional questions about the application process:

1) I know when you applied you said your intention was only to study in Canada. So how did you convince them that you would leave Canada after you finish, since you can't come back to US? I would be applying from the US as an undocumented person and I have very few ties to my country of origin. I have read something about applying under dual intent and I was wondering if you had heard or tried that?

2) How competitive is UA? The program I am interested in applying to seems sweet and kinda hard to get into and I would rather spend all the time and effort applying to a program I am somewhat guaranteed to get into.

3) What are you gonna be studing?
