I am with you. I never said it would be easy. Sitting at home feeling sorry for yourself will not get you anything though.

Honestly, that is not a good thing in the long run.Didn't get my first job until ~24 and legalized about a year later. When looking for jobs a lot of Employers always asked,"What've you been doing all this time[Employment wise] ?" but I did some volunteering during that time to cover any issues.

Are you guys upfront about your situation to employers or do you have to show fake documents?

Got my first job while in middle school, through middle school I have worked handing out ads, selling computer equipment, cleaning, being a janitor, from middle school through high school I worked in a warehouse, after high school and through college I have been working at a gas station, but only on the breaks.

How to get jobs, you meet people, you talk to people, you demonstrate to them that you are a very hard worker and that you will be a huge asset to them if they hire you.

Right now I have people advocating on my behalf to get me some good engineering jobs and positions in major companies, that is huge. Right now I am going to start getting involved with research and people will be applying for grants. They only way they can pay me legally.... stipends and scholarships, we will see if we can make it work somehow.

The only downside, I am about to graduate with a BS in materials science and engineering and seem to be gravitating in a big way towards sociology and stuff not in my field. But will see where this steers me.

Something else to consider, if you are your own employer, i.e., the boss, there is none of those issues that are apparent, and certainly an education makes it more likely to meet the people that have ideas on start-ups which you can sign up to not as an employee but as a co-owner.

College for education is no longer what gives you the advantage in this economy, college for networking, that is where you get the edge. It is not always how much information you know, but who is able to speak highly of you that may determine whether you land a job even in our current circumstances.

This has been told to me multiple times by various professors, and directors of various departments within my university, and I must say that seems to be the case from other people I know and whether they get employed regardless their situation.

Well... that is a bit risky, you never know what you will get.

That is how my dad used to get his jobs, but he ended up landing really bad stuff, employers that would make him work 14 hours for minimum wage and work him very hard without giving any breaks, you might get unlucky and get employers that will hire you, promise to pay you, fire you when you can to collect your check, and they don't pay you anything, they are betting that you will not do anything because of your status, and chances are most people will not do anything.

It is better and easier to work through intermediaries, advocates and allies to the situation that you are in that will talk to people and see if they can find a job for you, in that case they are asking their friends, and stuff like that, people that they know and who will be less likely to pull some underhanded tricks on you because they have relationships with whoever they talked to and do not want to damage those relations.

Also.... volunteering is a great way to get to meet people, potential employers and new friendships alike, people that are committed to a common goal that is most likely a good goal. It is networking, experience, and the like and little risk.

You are not getting paid so you are probably not going to be asked for documents, you are doing something that is good, you are gaining experience, and people get to see that you are a hardworker. Plus, its good to do something if you are not doing anything, sitting around the house gets very depressive.
