My first trip to the DMV: 10/22/12 (Same day my EAD arrived).

I went to the Sahara DMV. I asked the associate I wanted to take my permit test. She gave me a yellow form to fill out (basic info). After I finished the form, I gave her the form and my EAD. She asked if I had a social security number. I said: No, I was in the process of getting one. She said: OK, and she set up the computer I used to take the test.

She then charged me one-time fee of $25.

I paid, and then took the permit test and passed. She said: Congratulations. And I was given some paperwork to give to the information desk of the Sahara DMV. I went to the information desk, and gave the associate my forms. The associate gave me a number. I sat down in the sitting areas waiting for my number to be called. After my number was called, I went to the window and received help from another associate. He looked at all my paperwork and EAD. He then told me to take a vision test. It consisted of seeing out of this little machine and calling out letters and numbers. I was having trouble seeing out of my right eye, but I still passed. After I passed the vision test, I was charged another fee.

I was charged another fee of $22. This was to issue an interim permit (temporary paper document). After I paid, I made my way to the photo section of the Sahara DMV next to the information desk. I gave the associate all my paperwork and then the associate proceeded to take my photo. The associate said: The permit (plastic card) will arrive within two weeks. I was done, and I left. First trip done.

I applied for my social security number the very same day. I went to the Social Security Office on Buffalo. My social security card arrived four days later on 10/26/12. My card arrived on a Friday, and the DMV was having a 3-day weekend closure so I couldn't go to the DMV and update my information.

Now that my social security card arrived, I went onto the DMV website and scheduled a drivers test appointment for 10/29/12. I had my EAD, SS Card, and Interim Permit, so I was good to go. My plastic permit did not arrive yet but the DMV did not mind. I went to my drivers test appointment, and told the associate of my appointment. She then told me to wait to be called. I waited and waited, (nervous) but after a while I was called by name by the driving instructor. Both of us went outside and commenced the test. I passed by the way.

After passing, I was asked to fill out the yellow form again. After completing it, I was asked to take all my paperwork to the information desk. I was then given a number and I had to wait for my number to be called. After I was called, I received help from a nice associate. I gave her all my paperwork and documents, and I was issued an interim license (paper document). I was charged a fee of $3. I was then asked to take another photo. And that's what happened at the Sahara DMV (for me). I gave the Sahara DMV $50. All worth it.

NOTE: If you're taking the permit test for the first time, you will be charged a one-time fee of $25. If you do not pass, you may take it again the next day. This time, you will only be charged $10 each and every time you retake it. Save money, and study the handbook I linked a few pages back on this thread.

The same goes for the drivers test. If you do not pass, do not be discouraged. Log onto the DMV website and schedule another drivers test. At this point, you're only charged $3 if you pass.

Wow, MadMan. That summed up all my questions into basically one answer. You are the most helpful DREAMer from Nevada. I applaud you.

But by the way, how long did was the wait at the Social Security Office?

Thank you! I hope that helps everyone! I hope you fellow Dreamers get to have the same smooth experience.

I went to the Social Security Office on Buffalo at the time they opened. They are opened from 9am to 3pm (that's terrible). Anyway, there are two lines. One line is for benefits, the other line is for receiving a new card. The line for receiving a new card is on the leftmost door. It was packed even in the early morning. But, the wait was no more than 30 minutes. I went inside, and took a number from the machine. I waiting until my number was called and told the associate why I was there. The associate asked to see my birth certificate, and EAD. The associate then gave me a receipt. I left. The receipt said that: I, MadMan, applied for a social security number. It should arrived within 2 weeks (I had my EAD verified on the spot). It arrived in four days (results may vary).

However. I left the office and went home. As I was nearing the freeway, I noticed the receipt they gave me had the incorrect address. So back I go again. This time, the wait was looooonnnnggg. In my first visit, about 15 windows were open. The second time around only 3 were open. It was also packed with people. The workers go to lunch not even an hour in or something. So I waited and waited. I approached an associate when I was called and the associate corrected it.

Make sure that the receipt the associates give you has the correct information before you leave! Save some time, and don't pull a second trip!
