all the major banks are great if you can meet the requirements so you don't get hit with fees. if you live in IL come over to my branch where we know how to open accounts.

SSN is forever...
Getting a loan is a lot trickier than opening an account. Most places at least require some sort of visa.

I went in straight to the manager since I knew this could be a bit difficult and I was probably going to have to explain why I now had a ssn. The bank is also kinda new, when I opened my account it was called M&I , but now is call BMO Harris. The manager basically told me that, that could not be done because my ssn was only for work and it was also just temporary. And if I could not renew my ssn there would no longer be a way to verify my identity. He said that " the only good thing about the Dream Act passing was that I now had an ID". I was so mad that this Hispanic man was so ill informed about what was happening to his community specially knowing that 90% of the people that go to that specific bank are Hispanic. I was just so frustrated that I was just like whatever thank you for the waste of time have a good day ill informed Sir.
I guess I can understand that the bank can do whatever they want its their bank , they can do what they want under their discretion right?!?!?
I just feel like the excuse he gave me was pure bullshit , has this happened to anyone else or is it just my bank???
I had the same issue at Bank of America. They were quite difficult and asked me for a letter from the SSA office stating why my number had changed. I TRIED explaining how my number had not changed, and that the account was opened with my ITIN #... the fool then said that ITIN #'s were only issued to businesses ..... after a deep breath and counting to 10 I explained to her that an ITIN was issued by the IRS and not the SSA. That my number had not changed. She was basically clueless... she said to bring in a letter frm both agecies stating why the number had changed .... and she would then foward it to her legal department who then would indicate how she should proceed. ... She also said that normally what is done in these cases is to close that account (again she was cluless) ..... I just said a polite thank you and left. I then went to wells fargo and was able to update my info with no issues what so ever. Really what I need to do is take my business some place else.

where you work at? (I live in IL) PM me if necessary.

I noticed all major banks are charging service fees, but waived if you have direct deposit, or have a minimum daily balance. I ended up going from Chase to Bank of Internet because it is truly free without any of those silly requirements to avoid service fees, and they reimburse you any fee acquired on any ATM, nationwide.

Credit unions are okay unless you plan on doing anything other than very basic personal banking with them.

Careful, all major banks charging monthly service fees (unless you meet some requirements to waive those fees). Strongly suggest credit unions or community banks.

The requirement for my bank to waive its checking account maintenance fee is like an average daily balance of at least $50. If you can't maintain an average of $50 in a bank account, then maybe a bank account isn't a priority.

Large banks are great if you have multiple residencies in different states, or if you do a lot of traveling in the country. My bank (Citizen's Bank -- a subsidiary of RBS) is relatively large in the northeast, but whenever I go to my house in FL, it's usually a hassle.
