Actually, most universities don't pay much attention to legal status. I say this because I was accepted to a couple universities around the country, and most of them offered me scholarships.

I ended up going to a university here in Arizona since they offered me a full ride scholarship, so I couldn't refuse that.

But you know what, universities want students to apply, and they try their best to help their students out, so just apply. What's the worst thing that can happen? They might say no?

I can't think of a single University that blatantly states they do not accept illegals. The application process gets muddled when you are unable to provide a SS# which they assume would suggest that a prospective student would need to benefit from various loans/financial aid, etc.

Institutions of higher learning are NOT ICE/USCIS. They do not go around policing their student body like them.

Additionally, acceptance to universities is not the issue. It is paying for them.

Going to UM requires approx. $40,000 per year.

It goes even beyond being able to pay for a University. If Hopefuldreamer were to go to FSU, it would require her to either live on campus, or find an apt off campus. Not so easy if your undocumented.
i know. i'm pretty much in the same situation (can't pay for any of this). but there are some people that seem to be able to pay for it, so that's the only reason i was asking.

and i don't understand how some people get full rides to universities w/o being national merit scholars. you'd think that a freaking community college would think about offering me a full ride.

Well, I have an SSN but the issue with UF was that they kept asking for legal status. Literally, I would get a "Notice! Your residency information is due soon!" every week or so. So yeah.

I can't go to UF because my parents can't afford $595 per credit hour plus the school's health insurance policy [which would cost me $10,000-15,000 up front], ten thousand dollars in the bank, and then the infamous F-1 visa stamped on my passport.

I already graduated with an AA degree so now I'm just hanging around community college which is a pretty touchy subject for me. Grr. lol

I know I have other options to go to college but [this is gonna sound incredibly stupid and ridiculous lol] there's just something inside me that says to just wait and I'll be at UF in a little while. I dunno...it's been my dream school since I was in elementary school...meh. I'll look at other school after this semester if DREAM doesn't pass but I'm really not looking forward to that heh.

You were not required to prove that you had legal status to get those scholarships????

You beat me to the question. I always thought you had to be a legal citizen to in order to receive a scholarship. At least I was always told. You could be a special case. That pretty cool, I'm happy for you. I know of some people who get financial aid for school and end up spending half of it on tuition and the other on other useless crap. As for me I use my DL which I got about 9 years ago... Never got a SSN even though I've lived here for over 22years. But still optimistic about someday soon being a legal American citizen and open a few doors that are still closed due tomy situation.

As ID i use my school Id and Matricula as well as my passport. Some bars and clubs let you in with the matricula alone but others won't and ask for a second piece of ID.

I have a Wells Fargo account i opened it with my Matricula and school ID, but they wouldn't give me a credit card.

Yeah, I opened an account at Wells Fargo with my Matrícula and passport. My sister only had her Matrícula and really needed a bank account. When I went to open mine, I asked the guy [I did the whole process in Spanish; it just makes it easier, I think] if my sister could apply with just her one ID; he said yes even though you usually need two, so I guess it's just a matter of who you talk to. Being nice gets you places -

I have this other friend who opened a Bank of America account with her passport and her job ID...

I use my Consular ID card, but I try not to use it much. I don't think that a BOA check card with a photo is good enough since it doesn't have anything else but your name.
