Had to turn down scholarships awarded since there was no chance to travel to college.

Years of appeals and have just recently started DACA process.
Before that was considering going to a place I do not recognize anymore, taking a bus when there are confirmed stories of thugs "disappearing" passengers, and asking for help from well-off relatives (retired doctor). Then one day received hysterical phone call from said relatives to be informed that their home was broken into at gunpoint. They were beaten (including cancer-patient relative), and robbed of all jewelry and some title deeds...

Going back for some could mean delayed suicide.
What country is that story from?

I agree with you bunkm, I'm sorry to say it as well, but I wouldn't go back to Mexico. All that corruption from the government is what is giving power to all those criminals who just want to make money through kidnaping and killing. My sister lives in Mexico and she does not live in peace at all, every time I get a chance to talk to her over the phone she tells me awful stories of people getting shot everyday. Yeah they don't show it on tv anymore cuz Peña nieto prohibited the media to show that on TV. I love my country but safety right now is the issue, I cannot picture myself walking through the streets without someone trying to steal something from me, or shoot me for whatever reason.

Now I'm not saying every part of Mexico is the same.

Meanwhile, part of the problem stems from drugs and corruption, so as long as the US and Mexico don't fix that, things won't change. Plus, now that American companies will be able to get oil from Mexico, things will get worse...and that's gonna happen to Venezuela soon.

They already get oil from Mexico. They just can't own any of it in mexico. Oil over there is nationalized meaning nobody but Mexico can own the oil. They just sell it. They need to keep the oil nationalized but use the money that they get from selling it to improving the country and education. Which they are not. If I was a President, I will strickly use that money for education in Mexico.

What part of Mexico is that? I walked around Mexico so freely and felt very safe. I can see myself living there. Services and food is much much cheaper.
Is she from northern states of Mexico?

They'll be able to extract it themselves, while paying royalties to Mexico, which hadn't happened in 80 years or so (Let's not even get started with fracking). Again, reason why the US has been 'supporting' the Venezuelan opposition (off the record, of course, according to Wikileaks), so that the opposition can overthrow the socialist (the S word!) government...and so on and so forth.

The problem with Mexico and most Latin American countries is corruption, which stems from the fear of losing the government job one holds, or the 'duty' you have to 'help' your family or friends. The example that I cite is Monterrey (my hometown) and how they are in need of major road infrastructure rehauling. Instead, they 'patch' things that only last for a few years, which (surprise) it's always three or six years (when elections happen).

Also, like here in the US and most countries, apathy is what keeps bad governments in. The whole "I don't care about politics" mentality is just an excuse instead of saying "things take time, I don't wanna deal with it, I do not wanna be responsible for it", when, as citizens of any country, we have the right and duty to keep our governments in check. Just think how many people in the US have criticized the Affordable Care Act (approved by congress, so it should be Congresscare NOT Obamacare), yet, I assure you that only less than 5% have actually contacted their congressmen/woman about it.

Unfortunately a lot of bright people are living Mexico and other countries, and in the end, that doesn't help.

I have a friend living there. He hasn't mentioned anything about violence. But I reckon since she owns a store she might be an easier target. Hopefully everything will work out for her in her favor. In my town, the cops and mayor are actually doing their job and improving it my home town.
