Afghanistan was the Soviet's version of Vietnam to the US. It's crazy to think that Afghanistan had communism in the country for a short while.
The Soviets said that the government of Afghanistan, then Socialist, invited the Soviets to help the communist party hold power. I believe it came directly from the president at the time Hafizullah Amin, but I could be wrong. A lot of people lost their lives.
The United States was providing weapons to the Mujihaden and Osama Bin Laden played a huge role in repelling Soviet dominance in the country.
Crazy how the US helped the rebels that would, ostensibly, fly planes into buildings 20 years later in the United States.
