Where did you see it, ELIS website or the generic case status on egov.uscis.gov ?

Ask them directly for the "elis/tech helpdesk". I had the same problem because they kept transferring me to other people and then finally reached end of the maze

So... mine expires on 9/4/2016 and it doesn't look like it's gonna get approved anytime soon.

I don't think my employer will bring up that my EAD is expiring but I want to hear what would be the best option.

Should I just work like nothing happened or should I take a break from work? If I were to stop working and assuming that they will take me back, should I do some sort of unpaid leave or resign and then get rehired?

My time timeline.

Accepted - 5/12/2016
Bio done - 6/23/2016

Expires on 9/4/2016

Ask your employer to put you on unpaid leave until you get your new EAD. I would be up front about your issue to avoid getting yourself and your employer in trouble.

Unpaid leave will be okay? Because I'm technically still hired no?

I think it's easier to come back from an unpaid leave than from a termination. You are technically still employed, yes.
