What? I think you are confusing the military with Selective Service. Every single male living in the US has to register with them when you turn 18 regardless of legal status. You need PR or USC to join the military. For Selective Service you just fill out a form with your name and basic info, you leave SS# portion blank.

Yeah but isn't the registration in case of a draft? That way they will call you and if you get drafted you'll do military service.

If you'd seek adjustment of status before turning 26 USCIS would register you once you'd file for a green card.

WRONG.
3 attorneys have told me the complete opposite because i SPECIFICALLY asked for clarification to do it back like 3 years ago when i kept wanting to, thinking the same exact thing.. THREE. And they have all told me the same thing, theres nothing in the books that states that ALL and ESPECIALLY undocumented males should and MUST sign up for it because of exactly that, undocumentation. The only people that the "draft" applies to are USC's and PR's. I just didnt want to be by whatever chance in hell drafted into the military. Period. Why that is wrong, is beyond me.
It doesnt make a damn difference in your application for adjustment of status because you'll be okay if you have absolutely NO criminal record and go through whatever grandfather process it takes to adjust status at whatever age you turn, which is pretty much the only way you can be adjusted, and now i know it (SS) can be automatically implemented by whatever state you live in as long as they have your SS# on file and you fall in the age group.

Why do you need to wait to get a social to sign up when apparently you can do it without one?
Yeah.
So calm that shit down jerkoff. Again its not that serious.

Almost all other male noncitizens are required to register, including illegal aliens, legal permanent residents, and refugees. The general rule is that if a male noncitizen takes up residency in the U.S. before his 26th birthday, he must register with Selective Service. For a more detailed list of which non-citizens must register, see Who Must Register - Chart .
Thank You. The Illegal alien part is what i didnt understand fully and thats why i had to ask a lawyer, mind you this was 3 years ago, and even yesterday when i called again, they told me what they told me then. If youre signed up, youre signed up. nothing you can do about it. Only helps for citizenship, not much else.

That's why USCIS registers you to the Selective Service when you get a green card, after 5 years when you can apply for Citizenship, your 5 years of good moral character will be over.

If you are over the age of 26 and didn't sign up for Selective Service, you won't be able to apply for U.S. Citizenship until the age of 31, 5 years later, which doesn't matter because you would still have to wait for 5 years anyways in order to apply for U.S. Citizenship through Naturalization from a green card, unless you are applying through a U.S. Citizen spouse in which you would be eligible at the age of 29.
Exactly. I know they do it automatically already. Its just a plus to have done it earlier or before the process for adjustment even begins because it shows "Good Moral Character". In my opinion, stay away from the backseat of a cop car, thats good moral character enough.

Had a feeling it couldnt only be me. Seemed way too automatic. Same exact scenario with me, Lawyer was like wtf are you doing, dont sign up for that.. im like wtf do you mean i HAVE to, He's like NO you dont because It wont even apply to you.

Hence why i say, "I took my chances, its not that serious".

BertDude youre totally right, Again though only reason i really wanted to do it anyway was because i thought it would help with some kind of Dream Act or if my 245i/i130 kicked in and i finally got approved (which wouldnt be until i was 30+ anyway), But legal counsel already told me it wouldnt really help much and will automatically sign me up when/if I get a GC before i was 26.
So it was all hardball up in the air... if that makes sense.

Get your money back then.
Proclamation 4771 (Carter's Executive order)
Quote:
Section 3 of the Military Selective Service Act, as amended (50 U.S.C. App. 453), provides that male citizens of the United States and other male persons residing in the United States who are between the ages of 18 and 26, except those exempted by Sections 3 and 6(a) of the Military Selective Service Act, must present themselves for registration at such time or times and place or places, and in such manner as determined by the President. Section 6(k) provides that such exceptions shall not continue after the cause for the exemption ceases to exist.
Section 3 exempts lawful nonimmigrants
Section 6(a) exempts current military officers, foreign diplomats (and families thereof), and categories specifically exempt by the president. So far we were not exempt from Selective Service by any president, too bad your lawyers forgot to mention that required groups are negatively defined.

I agree I made a mistake in regards to you being able to obtain a green card and later naturalize. Generally you will be barred from naturalizing until you turn at least 31 years old, if you fail to register with selective service by the deadline.

USCIS registers you for selective service if you file I-485, or if you undergo consular processing abroad. Some DMV do that as well, I know NY does it, which is probably what happened in your case.

I wait for my social so I can file already with it without need to later contact SSS, also I'm only 20, so I'm no where close to the deadline.

Yeah now that I actually looked into the process it appears that either you have to register if you adjust status when under 26 years old (as USCIS will just forward your information to SSS), or won't be able to naturalize till 31 (which doesn't matter in all cases except naturalization while married to US citizen under the 3 year rule).

If you don't want to register you can hope that they do not start cracking down on people who don't register with SSS. Also if there's a draft I doubt that not registering will help you much, if anything uncle Sam's tentacles can extend very far when the need arises.
