Dumb question, but are we allowed to smile in the ID?

For those who had your Cali ID before applying for a license, did you guys show your CA ID along with you EAD when applying for your license?

Brother received his ID today. It expires on his birthday on 2017. He applied on 10/25 so it took 8 days to get it.

The guy didn't say anything about smiling, but I've seen lot of them with smiles as long as it's nothing ridiculous and intentionally goofy.

I read on another thread that we're supposed to be getting 2 year licenses but some have been getting longer ones (like in this thread). I was told that the people getting drivers licenses with EAD's are subject to 2 years, but if you just use a social you'll get a normal expiration date?

or is it pretty much just luck based on who handles your app?

You can't just use your social, you HAVE to use your EAD to prove legal status.

Right now it looks like it depends on the state, with CA being lenient but that may depend on who handles it.

It even says on the CA dmv website it's supposed to expire with the EAD, but our dmv's are so damn packed they might just glance over it.

I just put my ID# which is also your DL# BTW on the application when applying for your DL and they didn't ask me for anything!

There have been lots of questions about this. It depends on who handles your case. Technically they are supposed to follow the expiration on the EAD. But some of us get the Nice ones and they put the full term expiration.
Six years for ID, Five years for DL.

Yeah, I've been there a few times, just recently with my USC sister to get her ID and the guy taking the picture jokingly told her to smile.

All of those sample IDs have people smiling.
