My dad came to the U.S. legally on a student visa and brought me and my mother along too (I was 18 months).
He soon graduated, got a job (changed his visa to business), but was laid off from his job after 9/11.
Continued to stay even after the visa expired... :/

I've only been illegal for about 3 almost 4 years.... it's pretty hard though :/

Came to Miami on a tourist visa for two months more then 13 years ago....

Then I learned that we were here because we had inherited a house, used all the money to expedite the visa process, and really had no plans of leaving, landed in 96 from Colombia when I was 8.

I wonder how many of us would have problems communicating with people in our respective countries? I know I would, I know spanish, but still, I have to ask someone to translate for me on a lot of occasions and sometimes/usually have a hard time finding the right spanish words to use in a sentence. It would be almost impossible to talk to someone my age down there, with their dialect and slang words...

I was brought here at age 2 ( I am now 16) by my parents who over stayed their visas.
My mom was too scared to bring me before I was born because she didn't know anybody here.
Now because of her I am worried about college and getting a job.
I do not fault her though, at least they brought me to this beautiful nation.

I was brought here when I was a few months old.

22 years later and here I am ... struggling to maintain my sanity.

Good. Most of our parents may have known that they brought us here illegally, but likewise most of them didn't understand how to legalize their kids so that they could have the better future they were brought here for in the first place.

So don't be too hard on your parents people... My mom had nearly 10 years to get me papers if she had followed one of the few ways it was possible back in the days. But she just didn't know how or what to do(most of our parents weren't computer savvies like us).People make mistakes, if you consider your parents so bad for fucking up your papers status, compare them to the parents that abandon their kids. To the dads that leave their wives, or the moms that throw their babies in dumpsters... you'll quickly see that the person who brought you here is nothing less than a hero, for risking their own sake to give you a better future. So if you blame your parents(like most of us did at a certain point) realize that it's too late to be mad now. It's up to us to take control of our own lives and get it done right, for ourselves.

Everything was in placed, I got all the documents and my very own SSN. When I turned 10, my father left me with my American citizen relatives, while he went back to Thailand (that was the last time I saw him). Since my father never came back to the states, he lost his PR status.

When I tried to apply for a driver's license in High School, I couldn't. My American citizen relatives explained to me that the only step left in my PR was an interview with the neutralization department, which required a biological parent. I was estranged from both my parents, because they left me, so there was no way I could proceed.

I was so mad at everybody in my family, who kept this secret from me. I was angry at my dad, my American Citizen relatives who knew from the very beginning when my dad left and what that meant for my life. Growing up in the States, my home, and to be denied equal opportunities like my peers, and working hard to show that I am worth something and then to be repeatedly turned down and not accepted was hard.

I'm now 23 years old, attending UT at Austin, studying Music/ Nutritional Sciences/ Pre-Dental. It's been 16 years since I saw my mom, 13 years since I've seen or spoken to my dad. The only family members that I somewhat feel that I can trust and be safe is my American citizen brother, one of my uncle from Thailand, school, one of my college professor, and a few truly best friends. Other than these people and things, I keep my thoughts and feelings bottled up and most of the time "just deal with it and suck it up". I said this many times, counselors helped, especially when I was getting suicidal thoughts
thats very hard, but you have accomplished alot of things by yourself and you should be proud of that. im going to attend UT at Arlington. keep going, we must fight till the end!

Sometime during June or July of 99, my Grandmother and Aunt(RIP) brought me here. We came here because of a part of my family had moved from Venezuela to Florida. I have not seen my father or met my sisters because they live over there its been 11 years. There was really no point to bringing me here I was such a better student back in my country but when I began to study here that all changed I guess I was just homesick and i began slacking off sometimes it got really bad, but somehow I made enough progress to be qualified for DREAM. for our sake I hope it does pass this year because I can't go back the last ten years of my life will just replay themselves I think it is OUR destiny to be citizens of this nation. There's a silent generation in this country and that's us, Generation Dream.
