You do not fit in.

You won't fit in.

And without money, you can't fit in.

Heed my words now.
I have an aunt in japan. She has been living in japan for the past 12 years. She says that she loves it there and i might love it too, but what i have read in this forum really makes me doubt her.

I think i will stay with her for the 90 days i am allowed to be in japan. That should give me enough time to see were i stand. If i do not like it, i will go to europe instead.

I think europe might be more difficult for me because i do not have family in any europian country, but i will try my luck.

There are some good points here about Japan.I think the country has a great culture on paper to experience in the short term......but as a long term place to live might require some more in depth information.

-Japan does seem to have a more monolithic culture and thus many won't be truly accepted amongst the majority of Japanese.

-You have to carry your documentation on you wherever you may go and the police can ask for it.Not having it is a removable offense.

-There are no specific laws against discrimination.

-Permanent residency takes 5 years through a Japanese citizen if married.10 years of non-resident legal status to even apply. You WILL have to take a Japanese name if permanently residing.Residency, and especially Citizenship are quite difficult to gain.

-I have read there are huge problems with foreigners or 'gaijin' as they are called being denied even the most basic of services just because you maybe a foreigner, especially around traditional hot springs and tea houses. The ridicule of foreigners seem to happen throughout the country.

Anyway if you want more insightful knowledge on what it's like living in Japan there was this awesome forum but I don't remember the name. I tried googling japan forum but it's not in the first few pages even though it was very active so maybe it's gone now..

Some of the major points I recall is that xenophobia isn't that bad in urban areas like Tokyo, and as a foreigner you won't get anywhere without a degree and Japanese speaking ability, although you might get lucky with English teaching jobs.

This! Think a LOT about your aspirations. Traveling there, or even living there for a short time won't give you any idea of how the society there really works. This is coming from an East Asian who lived in East Asia long enough to see and feel the racism and cultural homogeneity, which I didn't fully realize before moving to the US. Sure, there's racism in any country and culture, but over there it's not considered as offensive a thing as in America. It's almost part of the culture. They may smile and be kind to you (esp in tourist-heavy areas), but it'll be very hard for you to be truly accepted as one of them. I wish this wasn't the way it is, but it's true.
