I went to the one on 51st and Pulaski today (I had an appointment). The guard was really nice and so was the person who took my prints. I was in/out in about 8 minutes. There were maybe 8 more people there but they were all pretty old. heh.

Go the earliest you can. Not only will you finish faster, but there won't be as many people waiting in line.

It's more likely you wont get denied, bah i joined the dark side and did mine, mostly cause the 2pm time is very unfavorable. The lady was nice but did see my time/date and i told her why, showed her the schedule, and i was allowed.
edit: I got there like 8:15 am, afte they opened, probly had 15 people ahead of me, i remember # 889, and i was like 903. 8:45ish and i was out already. @ riverside asc

The whole process took about 10 minutes for me.

Now, my appt. was scheduled for next Wednesday at NOON but I went yesterday at 8am.

My suggestion is: get there BEFORE they open. You will see people there but not too many and things should go smoothly.
If you don't mind me asking, what state and what city was this in?
