I'm really shocked to hear that kids didn't know until later. I came here when I was 10 and knew right away something had gone wrong. We were sitting in the airport's immigration office when they found a translator to tell us how screwed we were and hand landed in the wrong country and gave us the choice of going back to the country we flew out of (our 1 day transit visa was expired by then) or be detained and go to court. It was terrifying as a 10 year old (closer to 9) to be in a different country and be told you were going to be detained.

There was no sugarcoating that shit. Although after being jetlagged, I passed out and woke up in a stranger's house and for a second thought it was a bad dream, but it turned out for women and children, they had special housing arrangements until our first hearing and my US relatives arrived and we were paroled to them. Technically, we had not yet entered the US - ie. we were excluded from entering. Physically, we were in the US and at least for the next 2 years had some sort of status and many promises were made after that from adoption to appealing, etc.

It wasn't until 4 or 5 years later that I realized there was no more hope and went into survival mode. -making up stories about why I couldn't get a DL, couldn't get a job, etc. and being suspicious of strangers.

didn't really affect me during high school since I didn't want to go to college so applying for college and all that scholarship crap I didn't care about

but now I'm about to turn 20 in a month and been out of high school for about 2 yrs, it sucks since I can't really get a job without ssn but now that I'm approved I'll soon be going on a job hunt and i'll try saving up for a car

This is a very very long story and I'm getting into the "too much info" catagory so I'll just PM you lol . Short version is that we either somehow got on the wrong plane, or got off too early.

i've been in the US since i was a month old. i've always knew i was born in Mexico but growing up in a small town, immigration wasnt an issue. there were a few other kids that didnt drive or work so not doing those things werent unusual. i realized how much it held me back when i wanted to go to college and knew that it would be a long shot if at all possible. back in 2001, there werent the opportunities there are now for college.
