Got my license the other week. It expires in one year. 
I guess it's because I'm under 21, and I have to get the landscape style DL next year after I turn 21.
I did not have any problems at my DMV in Joliet, IL, except my driver's side window doesn't roll down, so I had to call my sister to bring her car.
Also, the driver that took me to the DMV did not need to sign any documents saying that someone drove me to the DMV.
I guess it's because I'm under 21, and I have to get the landscape style DL next year after I turn 21.
