I don't know where to put this, but I just wanted to share with you guys that I went to the DMV today to renew my license.

Most of you in California have received a renewal notice from the DMV that requires you to come in and take the written test again. It's a hassle, yes, especially if you're working or going to school. I luckily had a half day off today, and the DMV in Montebello had an opening.

Although the building was crowded as fuck, the whole process only took me an hour. There was a bit of a hiccup when I first turned in my renewal application. The lady asked if I had a limited term driver's license. I should have mentioned my new EAD from the start. After I gave it to her to scan, everything went really smoothly.

At this particular DMV, the written test is taken on touch screen monitors. You can see right away if you get a question wrong. If you answer correctly, the screen will simply take you to the next question. It's actually pretty neat because you can track your progress as you go. You can also skip up to three questions during the exam. It's kind of like an AP Test.

I only missed one question

My advice to all of you in California is to wait until you have your EAD in hand to renew your license. However, I found that many of the DMVs are booked until October. So if you're expecting to have your EAD soon, book an appointment now. Also, just a freebie advice, if you didn't like your last license picture, wear a nice shirt and get your hair did when you go. You get a new pic! Another freebie: if you're booking an appointment at the Montebello DMV, book it as early as possible. Parking's a bitch.

@Vivace I didn't need to take a written exam when I renewed. They just made a copy of my EAD, took my photo and printed my temp license. It all took me 30mins as a walk-in. This was for Santa Ana DMV in CA. I get the same guy whenever I go to the DMV so maybe he was making it easy for me to be in and out?

Maybe so.

My renewal letter specifically said to take a written and vision test.

You might be right!! I accidentally took the notice for my ID since I purchased both and they send you the notice for both. When the guy realized that, I offered to run to my car but he said he could just look it up on the computer. That might have been why it was different?? Do people with a normal term license need a visual and written when renewing?

Got My Card Yesterday!!

Just like everyone else I lose a month on my future expiration; which is no biggie to me.

What's weird though is that now my new card says country of Origin Unknown... It had my country on the previous EAD... Don't think this is a biggie either.
