You arrive in the building and the moment you go in you are in a waiting line. It was about 1.5hr after lunchtime and there was nobody waiting in my case. I was called by an officer, a Hispanic woman who spoke good Spanish sitting at an enclosed desk, I greeted her, and the first thing I asked her was if they allowed walk-ins. She answered that it all depended on my appointment date. I presume that if the appointment is within the same month of your visit then you are good to go. I handed over my biometrics receipt and my passport. She said I could proceed, demanded that I turn my cell phone off and dispose of my bottled water >: ( [at least they had drinking fountains]. She gave me a clipboard with a single form to fill out, annexed my biometrics receipt to it, returned my passport, and told me to take a seat among the people who were already waiting. I'd say there were about 20 people seated in total excluding me. The room is quite large, there must have been around 75-100 chairs.

The sheet I was given was divided into two sections. The top section, which had about 15 fields, was for me to fill out and it asked for information like my name, date of birth, previously used names, some of my physical characteristics (hair and eye color, weight, and height), my alien number, and the biometric testing receipt number. I completed the form in about two minutes, went back to the officer, returned the form, and she completed some fields on the bottom section ("Official use only"). She then stamped my biometrics receipt, attached a ticket number to it, and told me to return to my seat. She had a very nice attitude and was easy to interact with.

The wall in front of me had an electronic counter about 10 feet from the floor. The counter was counting up and the ticket I was given was only a number away from being called. On the same wall there were two parallel, doorless openings that led to rooms where the actual biometric tests were taking place. I could see the people staring into computer screens and having their fingerprints taken. After waiting for like three minutes a fingerprint technician called me--my number hadn't even appeared on the screen. The technician was a black woman with a very outgoing personality and was asking me a bunch of personal questions to build rapport so that I could feel comfortable with the process.

The first step of the process was to verify that my personal on the computer screen was correct. After it all checked out we proceeded to perform the fingerprints test. She took the fingerprints of each and every finger on both of my hands--these were taken on an electronic fingerprinting device, no ink was involved. Once this step was completed she told me to take a seat a few feet away from the computer, told me to look into a fancy DSLR camera (no crappy webcams), took my picture, showed me to the computer and asked me if I liked my photograph and I being a smart-ass answered that I looked handsome and she lol'd. Lastly, she gave me a small survey for me to fill out about the overall process and the quality of the staff which I filled out on the spot, told me to put it in a box on my way out, exchanged pleasantries and GTFO. There was no mention of the next step, the technician only told me not to lose my stamped receipt.

Long post is looooong. This should cover all of your questions
