Of course you cannot receive FAFSA.

But you can send it in so that the school you're attending can decide if they want to award you any money from their own endowment.

This happened to me when I was applying for financial aid at a few colleges a couple years ago. I mailed my FAFSA to the financial aid office at the university where I was applying and about a week later it was back in my mailbox with a little note that said, "please write your ssn#". The next day I took it personally to the financial aid office and they accepted it with no problem. I'm guessing the person who received my FAFSA just didn't know my situation, since I just left that part blank. I'm guessing this is what happened to you as well. The person who received your FAFSA might be new in the FA department or just didn't know what to do with it.

If you can, I would suggest taking the FAFSA to the financial aid office yourself. Or you can always try mailing it in again, with a note explaining your situation.

You cannot qualify for government aid without a SSN...however, you could apply and use your rejection letter to signal to a university that you are not receiving aid and then maybe they would be willing to sponsor your education.

A few years ago, the counselor at the EOPS office said that he would "walk in" the FASFA for me so that I could get a state waiver that was available. I don't know if they can do the same for you.

I ended up getting a Fee Waiver for my classes. Just make sure that all of the information in that form is completely valid.

So you recommend me standing in the Financial Aid line at school and filling a form out just to see? and what does it mean when "he walked in" the form?

I would recommend that you speak to a financial aid counselor who is familiar with people who are in our situation. He will be able to tell you what resources are available to you. You might want to seek out undocumented students in your school, as they might know about certain resources available. Whatever you do, just make sure that all of the information that you submit is valid.

FAFSA is a form used to ask for financial aid from the federal government. Dreamies DO NOT qualify for this type of aid.

However, the form can also be used to determine how much financial aid you are ellegible for. Scholarships use the FAFSA when they have income limitations, and schools can use it if they give out need-based grants/scholarships to their students.

You can get the FAFSA form, fill it out, and turn it in to your school or scholarship organization. You should NOT fill in the SSN spaces. Do not fill it in with your ITIN number; do not fill it in with 000s.

If you are applying to schools this summer and haven't talked to any school's financial aid department, do so as soon as you can. Most private colleges will give undocumented student some sort of aid and can be very understanding. Public universities, well, it depends on what state you live in.
