If you guys are aware of current event involving the president, then you know hes arriving to Los Angeles today. He will be attending 2 town hall meetings one of which, if i recall, will have a few top students from a school who are mainly hispanic. These students are going to have the privillage to ask Mr. president questions. i wonder if Dream Act will come up? He will aslo be on the Tonight Show making him the first president to ever do so. It would be great if he spoke on immigration issues. Especially the Dream act. lets see what happens tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just in case anyone missed it,here is a basic outline of what he had to say.
Quote:
COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — President Barack Obama says the United States is a nation of immigrants but the country must have control over its borders.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Southern California, Obama said immigration is a high-emotion issue that cannot be dealt with in pieces. He says he wants to work with leaders in Congress and in Mexico to come up with a comprehensive plan.

Obama says it's important for longtime illegal immigrants to have a path to citizenship so they can join unions and get protection from employers who exploit them. He says those illegal immigrants could earn U.S. citizenship if they pay a fine and learn English.

Obama says residents who have put down roots should be able to come out of hiding.

I saw this via a live feed, he seemed uneasy when he was asked the question. IMO he knows he is going to have to lead in pushing this legislation through congress.

I wouldn't blame him for being uneasy. This is sure to hurt his approval ratings if it blow up. I do think it will be different this time around. We have already heard the arguments from the other side, so it won't sound as bad again. He will just need to convey an argument that ties in national security, and the economy.

Will it be hard? Yes, but I think he is a good enough messenger to do it.

Yeah we tried to get tickets for that. It's a lottery format. No surprise here: none of us were picked. I'm sure they'll have the video on the net.

It looks like he taking a middle group approach. Getting approval from both sides of the party line. 1. Closing the boarders so as to not allow another wave of illegal immigration (addresses concerns that once a group of individuals are granted a pathway another wave will come which did happened when the last amnesty bill was passed) 2. Paying a fee, getting in the back of the line (addresses concerns of people getting ahead of those who filed for legality a long ways away plus gaining money for an already shakey economy) 3. Providing a path out of the shadows (which appeases everyone here that is undocumented)

I do feel that us dreamers will not in the back of the line as the DREAM act will probably be attached which will nullify a longer wait time. Also, during the video i notices that he chose the word "citizen" when it comes to filing, which means people will get residency.

All in all i think it's a good plan for all of the US. I wonder how much they will tax.. 5 thousand? 12,000,000 (illegal immigrants) x 5000 dollars (fee) = 60,000,000,000 dollars. Sixty billion dollars. Looks like a good way to pay of some of the recovery money yeah?

no i doubt the fee will even be 5g's... i say more like 2thousand maybe 3! anyways, tonight hes going to be on Jay Leno lets see what he says there? i bet no big issues will be mentioned just jibberish. Anyways, im sure he wants to take action on this whole immigration thing (since his grandma was staying here illegally.) I jus wonder whats taking him so long? if the dream comes true, i hope it comes true this year cause honestly in times like these its even harder for us dreamers!

I don't see much of a correlation between Obama mentioning immigration on national TV, and getting the few Senate Dream votes we direly need. The President's influence can only do much, it's always going to come down to the damn votes.

That being said, I think it's pointless to hold your breath for him to speak up on the issue. Actually, I'd rather prefer a silent/stealth passage of our bill - all the benefits, half the drama.
