I was talking to a girl I know from my academy, she's in the same situation as me (undocumented student), but she has a job cuz she got a Tax ID number, she says.
She told me they don't usually check the SS#'s, so she just puts down her Tax ID # in applications instead.

Does anyone have any more information about this?
If you do, could someone let me know how to get one?

I'm pretty sure Tax ID # = ITIN (Individual Tax Id #)

You can work with ITIN; provided that they don't make you fill out an I-9 form. That being said, ITIN is not interchageable with a SS#, nor does it give the person the right to work. It's mostly useful with smaller businesses that can pay you on a 1099 tax form with no extensive background check and etc.

If she's going around filling out any job applications using the ITIN, it's only a matter of time before she gets screwed.

Yeah, ITIN is what I meant.

She already has a job, I'm not sure exactly where, but it's a place where other people in a similar situation work at as well. I'm sure she'll be fine.

It's good to know to be prudent and not go around everywhere putting your Tax ID # as a social, though.

In any case, how do I get one?
My friend told me it would make it harder to go deported if I had one.

Also, sorry for the ignorance, but what exactly is an I-9 form and a 1099 tax form?
I need to look more into this...

^I-9 is basically a form that checks your immigration status, thus we can't fill it out.

1099 is an 'contractor' type income, as opposed to W-2 (which mostly requires I-9). A 1099 job is possible with ITIN and someone like in our situation.

Ah, I see. That's good to know.

But that still doesn't answer my initial question...
How do I get an ITIN/Tax ID #?

You can either apply yourself, or more likely talk to an accountant/tax preparer and they'll help you.

All the information you need is either on this site, or the IRS page & google.

False.

It makes no difference. My advice to you would be to stop listening to this friend of yours, she sounds horribly misinformed, and that only leads to trouble.
