we live in a global market, where patriotism doesn't mean much anymore. For some nations; creating a self centered country with no contact with the outside world, has been devastating. In the beginning of times, the U.S used to be the world's most powerful nation, riches flowed thanks to slavery and cheap labor. the U.S imports most of its goods from other nations.

We get our cars from the super engineering of Germany and Japan. We get our technology from Japan, our clothing from India and our foods from Latin America. Almost every construction material is made in Italy and Spain. the only thing we get from the U.S is the service industry and Hollywood.

They say kick all this undocumented workforce out of here, if they do that, they will sink further down the bottom. this is a global economy, competition is a must! for survival. China is no longer an isolated nation; its modernizing... its economy grows 10% each year... with 3x more skyscrapers than NYC, and 900 million people on the labor force... that's 3x the whole population of the U.S.

It is always good for a nation to export to other countries, it is never good to import... all the goods that are made in China, Germany, India, Latin America, etc... they all could be made here. but they're not... the whole reason is because the U.S lacks the work passion, dedication and competition.

all this has allot to do with the immigration debate... we need more people to compete, competition is what made this country so great. if Americans aren't going to compete with the undocumented workforce, then they have to compete with the world; and no, they can't avoid that...

tell me what you think...

Currently, the US is an individualist nation i.e. the individual is able to pursue their goals in the best way the individual sees fit. The idea of a unified national economy exists only on paper, or perhaps doesn't even exist at all. This is clearly exemplified by the lack of regulation in the financial system. If one can get wealthier by sale of imported goods at a cheaper price compared to the price of the US product, they will do that without hesitation, despite the fact it damages the national economy.

Obviously no one in their right mind thinks that. That view is only shared by xenophobic bigots. A division of cheap labor is the absolute best thing for the national economy. It is virtually necessary to keep the price of certain products low, if they are produced on a massive scale. Every country has such division, it just so happens that in the US those jobs are filled by undocumented individuals. If we remove all of them, only two things can happen. a) the price of certain products like farm products etc. will go through the roof to make up for the decrease in production and b) there will be a massive shortage of workers and eventually part of the lower middle class will sink down into what's now considered a lower/working class. Ironically they make up the biggest portion of those xenophobic idiots. And then they would really have a reason to complain.

I recommend everyone to watch a bit of this...
Slavery and the Making of America

A documentary about slavery in America. Before the year 1800, native Africans were brought to the newly colonized parts of America for slave labour. Their toil helped make the United States the richest nation on earth. America has been a slave-owning country longer than it has been a free one, and the legacy of slavery haunts us still. This is a story of resistance, and the struggle to maintain human dignity. It is the story of the demand for freedom, told through the lives of enslaved people, and it's the story of the founding fathers you never knew.

Its a remarkable documentary... has allot to do about the cheap labor that gives America its riches today.

I agree, but most Americans will never admit that this is the truth. They will just hide behind their favorite saying, "America is the best country in the world."
.. not that I disagree.

omg every spelling bee winner is either from India or Pakistan... you see no white kids ever winning that thing; what a shame.

to jollie;
America is a great country, their values and opportunities are great. but this country also has its flaws... we wouldn't see it as much if we were abroad. the U.S lacks on innovation, it lacks on health care, it cant fix a broken immigration system and the education standards are very low compared to ones in Europe.

imo, someone who loves one country, they will never stop and say "its great, lets leave it like that", but instead, they should want to always improve it. the U.S should teach other counties about gay marriage, about health care, about gun control; and not have so much controversy about it inside its own walls.

a Chinese guy once said, a great society is one that gives everyone a chance to lead a good life. to the ones who are born unfortunate; to have the chance and be born again.

ha ha true dat! I work with the Chinese and its all about cheap cheap labor. It costs about $5 each to make a garment. Including all costs fabric, shipping, wages, etc. I don't know if we as Americans are willing to pay more for our products. Would you? But I think its totally possible American Apparel did it. You just have to know how to sell yourself.
