Do any of you know if I need an SSN if I'm doing any kind of freelance work?

Not for Graphic Design (well in most cases). You could also be a "handyman". But it depends really on what it is you're planning on doing.

I think it depends on what you are doing and the people you are dealing with (company vs individual). For the most part, I've been paid cash/personal check. I've done some computer stuff for small businesses, played an instrument at events, and a few other random things.

Just be careful, because some people might try to hussle you because you're getting paid cash and it's off the books. Good luck to you though.
