Harry Reid reiterates the need to revisit immigration reform.
Quote:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) vowed Monday that the Senate would consider a “comprehensive” immigration reform bill that would include giving amnesty to illegal aliens—an item he referred to as “bringing the 11 million people out of the shadows.”

Reid said that Senate consideration of a massive new immigration bill would come after the Senate dealt with the health-care issue and energy.

The Senate is now looking at a national health-care plan being promoted by President Obama and legislation that would cap carbon emissions in the United States in the name of fighting “climate change.”

“I know that I talked to the White House, recognizing they were going to have a meeting, and gave them my ideas as to what should be the lay of the land on immigration,” Reid told reporters on Monday.

“I said in this room last week that I've got to do health care, I've got to do energy, and then I'm looking very closely at doing immigration,” Reid continued.

“I think it's something that we have to do. It's important,” Reid said. “I've outlined to you on a number of different occasions what I think should be in the legislation. I think it's extremely important for our country. We have an immigration system that's broken and needs repair.

“I’m going to do comprehensive immigration reform,” said Reid. “I’m not going to do it piecemeal. That's an excuse for everybody to do too little.

“We're going to do it all at once,” he said, “and we're going to have comprehensive immigration reform that will include taking care of our borders, a decent guest-worker program, bringing the 11 million people out of the shadows, doing something that is so important with the employer sanctions bill that really is a catch-22 for everyone.”

“We're going to do it all in one piece of legislation, not give people an excuse that they voted for one thing and think that they're through with it,” said Reid.
I am a bit concerned about this talk about a 'guest-worker' program since the Unions aren't really for the idea.

not everyone wants to permanently live here. certain day laborers that i know; just want to make some money and go back. the dollar is of high value in South and Central America.

simple, for those who want to just come and work temporarily, there is a way too. for those who want to stay permanently; there is a different path. certain workers have wives and kids back home, for them waiting 10-13 years to be legalized; is a big sacrifice.

so w/e those union people say, who cares... they are looking after their benefit; just like everyone else.

personally, i believe that we are going to be burned like last time. once the debate opens up; everyone is gonna start demanding w/e they want; forgetting about the "give and take" that is ESSENTIAL for this passage.

Amnesty ?! AMNESTY??!!

Why do they have to use this word. Amnesty implies complete absolution of past crimes, and therefore implies that we're doing something wrong at the moment. If you allow for this implication then the critics pretty much get an open door to walk through and attack the bill. Hell, even I cringe when I hear it.

I rather hear things like "reform", "fines", "conditional residency", and "employment verification", then I at least know there might be some real bipartisan support behind the bill.

“We're going to do it all at once,” I'm personally afraid of this "all or nothing" approach, even though it's been pretty much decided that this is the only way to go.

All in all...we still don't know anything

^ CNSnews is a right wing news website. I would be surprised if they didn't call it amnesty.

I don't see why people get bent out of shape when they hear that word. Actually, I will go out on a limb and say people's insensitivity to the word helped to kill CIR.

Flashback 2007.

CIR Supporters: We need to reform our immigration laws.
CIR Non-supporter: This is amnesty.
CIR Supporters: This isn't not amnesty.
CIR Non-supporters: This is amnesty.
CIR Supporters: Blah..explain why it isn't amnesty...
CIR Non-supporters: This is amnesty.
CIR Supporters: Well, by not doing anything this is defacto amnesty.
CIR Non-supporters: This is amnesty.
American Public: Amnesty is easier to understand.
Bill dies... X_X
Me: Seriously...

Lets hope this argument happens in 2009 or whenever

CIR supporters: We need to reform our immigration laws.
CIR Non-supporter: This is amnesty.
CIR supporters: We need to fix our laws
CIR Non-supporters: This is amnesty.
CIR supporters: Legalizing the undocumented will allow them to pay their taxes, and their fair share.
CIR Non-supporters: This is amnesty.
CIR supporters: This is a national security issue. Why don't we know who is in our country.
CIR Non-supporters: Hey, aren't you listening. This is amnesty.
CIR supporters: We hear you, this is amnesty. So you want our laws to continue to be broken?
CIR Non-supporters: Well...
American Public: This may be amnesty, but we need to fix our laws.
Bill passes?

First rule of politics. When you are wasting your time trying to explain something, you have already lost the argument. Keep it simple. Let the word amnesty be used. Find a better argument to overcome it.

Unions need to give up something too. McCain and other republicans won't even consider a CIR without a guest-worker program.

Harry Reid is up for reelection next year.....and according to the polls of his state he is not looking too good!!!! Now if you want to see an example of what happens when voters email/fax/write the candiate....here it is http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.php?t=11804 - Leaders in Milwaukee's Latino community expressed outrage Wednesday that state Sen. Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) and other Democrats removed provisions in the state budget that would allow some undocumented students to pay in-state college tuition and let illegal immigrants receive certificates that would allow them to legally drive.

don't let this propaganda spread, please remove this article. This article obviously has an anti-immigrant slant, it falsely and purposely refers to immigration reform as "amnesty". This is just a simple attempt at anti immigrant spin. They use the word amnesty because they know what kind of negative thoughts the word automatically brings, free ride, amnesty, free for all, which is far from the truth but they use this word because they know how easy it is to mislabel, they can make it a simple talking point that is easy to remember and people will not take the time to read anything besides that, they will see "amnesty" prejudge and just not keep looking into it, its just politics. It is very easy to stamp the word amnesty on something like this just to incite the anti-immigrant crowd

This is not amnesty, amnesty implies a free ride, implies no consequences, implies getting something for nothing, that anyone and everyone can come and apply, and then just cut in front of everyone else

Comprehensive immigration reform will NOT be amnesty, far from, to qualify people will have to pay a fine, pay backtaxes (if they did not previously), and meet many other requirements to qualify before they get a chance to apply.

We must be careful of spin like this, there are many people out there who for one reason or another want to keep us from suceeding, and they know how easy it is to oversimplify and spin a problem in a way that their slant sounds reasonable and people will not even question it beyond that. this is propaganda, this is nothing but pure spin and we need to watch out for people like this that only want to twist the truth.

this news article was merely created to create spin and if you dont believe me look at the kind of comments its recieving, we need to be cautious of the way we say things, because there are people out there who are looking for any way to twist it against us

it is not good for us, it is not good for humanity to spread such ignorance.

Dont ever underestimate the power of words, it can be the tool of democracy as well as the tool of oppression, lets make sure it is not used for evil
