I had been going to school for two years now, and everything was fine. Apparently, SC passed a law last year requesting all public institutions to check the status of all non-US citizen students. Here's the email:

"The Office of International Services requests that you please bring all
of your immigration related documents in to our office so we may make copies and ensure your file is updated. Documents should include: passport, visa, form I-94, and USCIS approval notice. Thank you for your cooperation."

I called to see what this meant, and as suspected, I will not be able to return to school this Fall until something happens in congress or marriage or who knows. Its not even about the money anymore, this is crazy. I hate SC.

It sucks because im currently in the Honors program at my university with a 3.73 in the engineering program, which is top 5%. - in many ways, all that for nothing today. Life's too real man, this aint no fairy tale.

just wanted to vent, any advice is welcome and best of luck to all. I hope your states are better.

That really stinks. I wish you the best of luck and can only tell you to stay positive and make the most out of your situation (joining a local engineering society, maybe?).

DREAM will pass.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm not sure if moving to another state would be an option. Then again, you'd have to pay out-of-state fees.

Like VaeVictis said, the Dream will pass.

You may not be destroyed, try looking at this website. There is tuition reciprocity for certain programs (majors) in the cooperating southern states, SC is one of them. You can search for your own interests on this website (Click "Search for programs" on the left side). Check it out. Hope it is helpful.

I don't think his issue is about tuition as much as his lack of legal status.

Either way, to the OP, your situation REALLY sucks but know that it will get better. All that effort was not for nothing. In the mean time, try not to forget all you learned (maybe community college?).

Wait, so are you saying SC banned undocumented students from going to public colleges?

If so, I didn't know a state could do that. I could have swore that the federal government said, since there are no laws specifically banning undocumented students from college, they are allowed to go, but states can set the guidelines for them to do so. I forget where I read that release.

Other options.

Have you thought about transferring to a private school in SC? If you were paying out of state tuition already, the cost would probably be comparable. If not, try to transfer to a college in another state since it would be the same cost.

Edit: Ouch, Never mind.

LawCenter:

In Summer, 2008, South Carolina became the first state to enact state legislation that banned undocumented students from attending public colleges (H 4400), as signed by governor in June, 2008. Strong Illegal Immigration Bill Biggest Legislative Achievement, Post and Courier [Charleston, SC], June 7, 2008, A10.

Good God. I'd say that's unconstitutional but then again, they have plenty of arguments against us, PLUS South Carolina is a conservative state, of couse they'd do that.

For shame. We should be passing laws to help legalize the undocumented, not keeping them from educating themselves. You know, those kids that could be in a classroom in the fall will probably be wandering the streets, not knowing what to do with their lives. Crime rates will increase but then what do they care, just throw the kids in jail and send em back to wherever.
