why suicide?
http://iamashadow.wordpress.com/2008/06/22/why-suicide/

Why is the suicide worst among Hispanics. Well, the following study attempts to answer that but I will go into more detail. Well, I can easily answer that as someone who has almost committed suicide and now recuperating with medication. Life isn’t easy for an undocumented student. Well, I can’t speak for the entire Hispanic population because I’m different but I can speak with some authority about undocumented students because I am one.

Why was suicide the answer. Believe me when I say that being one of three undocumented students at a school that houses almost 18,000 undergraduate students, the pressure is to the maximum to succeed and to basically not fuck it up for those who might following. In my case, I knew that if I did badly, it would like badly for all undocumented students trying to follow on my footsteps because the administration would just say that because I failed, all would fail. There is no such thing as failure in my life. Then there is the issue of trust and privacy. How can I live in a place where everyone is different to me in the most fundamental ways like freedom to drive, to travel, to live in peace, to not have nightmares and not be stressed 24/7. Believe me, I am stressed 24/7, my balding head (I’m 19) is proof to that. Who could I trust? Who could I tell my secret to? Living as an undocumented student is like living a lie almost, because you have to pretend to be like everyone else, certainly act like it, when in reality you are not.

How can one not feel sad and hopeless when you see in the news and the Internet that you are being called scum, among other things, for the simple fact of being something that you didn’t even choose to be. It affects the psyche and self-esteem. Hopefully though, as things get worse, they will eventually get better. Things have gotten better for me, because I found great friends and people I can trust. And my grades have gone up which makes my life easier.

oh man...

It's great that you're getting treatment because a sane (for lack of a better word, b/c I don't mean you're insane) person wouldn't consider suicide. It is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and suicidal thoughts often come when a person has been depressed for a while.

In reality the only reason to stay here after you're 18 is because you want to; if you wanted to leave badly enough you would. But if you have the strength of character to want to improve yourself, you have the strength to make it through this ordeal, because this is about your life, not your parents' and not all the ones who come after you. You have to make the decisions that are right for you.

(Not to say you have to be completely selfish and abandon your family, but don't make decisions purely for fear of the consequences on other people. Relax! You only live once.)

hey, i didn't write that story... i just found it online... i just posted it because i found it interesting. and i know that even though not all of us may want to kill ourselves; we all have so much stress to bear.

American born kids don't have the balls to go to another state to live alone; after they are 18, don't forget that U.S itself gives you a little push to go on your own....

now think about an 18 year old undocumented person, to go and make a life for themselves in a country they haven't been to in 15 years. I don't think the assumption "oh you turned 18, you can leave" is realistic...

18 is just a number in the book. just because you turn 18 doesn't mean that your developed enough to make certain decisions in life. let alone go to another country like Canada or Australia. I don't think an 18 year old could prove much of work experience in a skilled field (required in the point system).

it is especially more difficult for females to go out on their own.

I have the girl that has been by my side for 3 years; that's the reason I didn't leave. I didn't leave because I wanna fight for what i deserve. my asylum application took about 10 years to come together.. even if my parents win asylum now; i wont qualify; because i turned 21. and i cant even adjust my status once that happens. talk about a system eh. i lose either way.

I know plenty of American born kids that had the balls to not only go live in another country but to fight for their own country!

fighting for your own country is one thing... getting your ass up at 18 and going somewhere to live in the shadows again; its another thing. i give props to gay people though for going in masses to live in countries like Germany; were they will not be humiliated against.

some of these kids that are still in H.S, they get absorbed into this military propaganda... they sign their name in the bottom, and their life is owned by people who are scared to go fight themselves. know what you are fighting for... don't become the puppet of elected officials.

my best friend came back psychologically destroyed; now he struggles to pay the mortgage cause no one will take him to work being in the state of mind he is. is that the country he fought for?

these recent wars are puppet wars created for the benefit of few. 4,000 soldiers killed in Iraq; that's sad. you allow a child to fire a gun before they could buy a nice cold beer... the war against terrorism should be a joint operation by all NATO, not only U.S, that's why we formed alliances.

Listen, we all have different abilities based on a different set of skills. Knowing how to deal with stress is nothing more than applying a set of skills that one picks up over the years. Some people don't end up developing these skills, and so, they should see a mental health professional. Such professionals will simply help them build the skills that they lack.

I personally am not even a little surprised that some people in our situation contemplate and actually go through with committing suicide.

We've been lying to our friends for so many years, and we seem to follow that philosophy that a story that one day might come true is not a lie at all. We all love the US, but realistically the dreamies who have been brought year at the age of 10+ are not scared of moving to another country. Instead they are scared of destroying the personalities that they seem to have created for themselves. I very rarely actually feel like myself these days, and I wish I was actually the person that I am in my friends' eyes. I know that the only thing that separates me from that person is the adjustment of my status. This constant misrepresentation of the truth can easily get to some people.

I've thought of suicide before, but I will never do something like that. If you really can't take it, going to your birth country ain't bad. You can always make new friends, meet new people. With a Diploma in places like Mexico you can get an actual good job. However, I choose not to simply because I've changed sides two times already, and man it can be a pain to make new friends, besides I got it good here. Just be grateful your not in some third world country, or in Congo. They live everyday with the fear of dying. We complain and complain. (A lot of us do, myself included...sadly) Instead of complaining we should all get our act together, make an organization, start making events and get attention from the Media. If you don't have the balls to fight for what you want, then maybe you should go back, or just hide under a rock. What do you think gave black people rights? They got together and fought for there freedom. (They got attention from the media) What are gay people fighting for right now? Equal rights!!! So we must also fight for equal rights!!
