Stressing over Marriage

Hi, I am a 20 year old citizen and I have been coming to this forum for quite some time in hope for good news on the dream act.
My boyfriend is also 20, and he is Filipino. We have planned to get married to legalize him, but I am afraid because I do not have a job. I don't want to get married and be denied because I can't support him well enough. We are currently living with my mother, with hopes of moving out once I get a job and he gets his stuff straight. But I am worried he will be denied, even though it is a bona fide marriage. He has a father who is in Canada, and is a citizen of Canada, that can help support us. My boyfriend can not immigrate there because we can't seem to get him a state ID[North Carolina], and he says that even if he immigrated there, he wouldnt be able to return to America for over 10 years because his Visa ran out a pretty long time ago.

Any help? Or suggestions? Or has anyone else even been through this?

Ok, first of all, if your mom is willing to help you guys out, then you can add her as a sort of cosigner. I can't think of the right word, but it pretty much means that both of you would be responsible for your husband. You do need to look into getting a job, though, because you're right. He would likely not be approved if you don't have an income. Don't worry because to begin, you don't need to prove any income, that comes later. I think you might be able to start the process without a job, as long as you have the money for the application fees.

He will be able to become legal, if approved, without leaving the US since he entered with a visa. So that's a plus.

I don't know if my mother can help considering she is just a waitress, and things are pretty tough as it is. I go to a community college now and I get a full pell grant. I am looking for a job, I have been doing so for a few months, but finding a full time job and going to school full time is pretty tough. Thank you, again.

Yeah, your mom could become a co-sponsor for you. And I think any US citizen could, as long as they have the means for it, right? I know for my dad before, a family friend found my sister a co-sponsor for my dad b/c at the time she couldn't support him alone.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a US citizen but just someone whom is a legal & lives here permanently who can sign the affidavit of support AKA I-864.I also highly recommend heading over to Immigrate2us.net before starting/doing anything !

I-864 Affidavit of Support. you pretty much have to show proof that you can financially support your husband. like you said,your mom is only a waitress,so i dont know.but it will be a lot better if you got a job also.i'll be married in a week to a USC and will start the process in september. good luck with everything

Yeah you can have your mom or someone else cosign..
Since you said he had a visa at one point that expired, that makes the process easier and he doesn't have to leave the country.. (assuming he has NEVER left and came back since it expired)
