Hello Dreamers,

I was reading on how to get an ITIN, and I read through form W7. But what I don't understand is, the application asks for an ID (passport) and an "original, completed tax return for which the ITIN is needed".

Now my question is...if I've never even filed taxes before, how do I get a tax form to go with the application?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question...but I really got confused there.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you go to a tax preparer, they should be able to help you out. Applying for an ITIN is a common thing, and they usually charge 30-50$ for it. As far as not working before, you do not have to provide that if you do not have one. There are other ways of obtaining an ITIN, legally, without a tax return.

Thank you for your help Ed, but can you tell me what are the other ways?

If I just give them my passport and w-7, would they give me a number without further questions? that doesn't sound right, or I could be misunderstanding...

Go to bank of america, get a savings and checking account. Once that is set up, Call customer service, (do not go to the local bank), and ask them a for a Formal Document, one with a formal company header, stating that you are a customer of theirs, and you have an "INterest bearing account". you need taht document, alongside the passport. The tax preparer should help you fill out the W-7.

ok...I see what you are saying now. Thanks Ed!

I do have one more question though. In this case, what would be the reason for me to submit w-7?

would i be a "nonresident alien filing a U.S. tax return"? or should I choose others? what would my explanation be?

Sorry if I sound nosy...I just want to be extra careful. :\

Ok I got printouts from my bank stating that I have a savings account with them and another printout that tells what percentage interest they give out on that account.

Is that printout and my passport sufficient enough to get an ITIN?

Any help will be appreciated.

A s far as I know you don't need a bank account to get an ITIN..ITIN is meant for tax purposes ONLY. I would recommend you to go to a compaby such is HR&Block. I know it is more expensive than doing it yourself (you can actually do it yourself), or going to a local agency. however, if there is a mistake on the application the the company such is HR&Block has to respond in your behalf. You should only need your ID (whatever country you are from, even better passport), I think birth certificate, and your tax form...you can call HR&Block and they will tell you what to bring to get it.

can the HR&Block notice that u are an undocumented if you avail of their services. Besides, what kind of taxes should i file (income?)? They will be asking for the W2 form. Will they still accept it if i don't have the W2 form?

Did you get your itin yet? I been looking to do this for awhile, but like you I don't know what to fill out on that W-7 form or where to go. I know H& R block seems like a good choice from what I read, so I want to know if you went and got your itin.

If anybody has recently acquired an itin, please tell us about it.

If you are in need of a itin this Credit Union will help you out.
The Latino Community Credit Union, the only catch is that it is only in North Carolina.
