I am a 19yr old college student and I REALLY need to work ( I also want to work, but I really NEED to work)!! Over the past couple of years, my documents expired (R-2 & DL) and cannot be renewed bc of my status. Also, my SS card got confiscated by the SSA bc the DMV noticed that my last name was misspelled by 1 letter when I applied for a DL, made me take it back, and SSA sent me with a letter so I could finally get my DL.

So....I have a SS # just not the actual card. And its worked out all great with applying to school and all bc they dont ask to see the actual document, you just type it in to a field on your online application.

Now, SSA will not issue me another card until I can show them that I have the right to work in the US (which obviously I dont and my original SS card even said "NOT VALID FOR WORK" on it). Now I know you have to have a SS# to be on the payroll but to my knowledge, employers ask to see and make a photo copy of the original SS card, at least the jobs on/around campus do. I really wanted 1 of these jobs bc I dont have a reliable form of transportation and there is no public transportaion where I go to school. Is there any job out there that will hire with JUST a SS # w/out having to see the actual card??

ALSO, I am debating going to WA to get a DL. I know some1 who was successful so I want to try. However, they have a SS "card" that they showed for ID. How would having the # but not the card work??
( I thought about going back to SSA and asking for the letter but I was legal and brought my visa the last time I did that, now my status has changed and im scared that it might cause problems)

Thanks in advance =)

There must be...

There are under-the-table jobs that won't require any SSN at all. There are employers who are less stringent and also employers who will desire all documentation properly filed.

Please use the search function or Google...

My sister actually went and got her WA driver's license a few weeks ago and didn't bring her SSN card. She simply memorized it and spewed it onto a piece of paper (she says).

I asked her and she told me that you only need to show your SSN card if you are using it as proof of identity. The way proof of identity works is that you either present 1 stand alone document, 2 secondary documents, or 4 tertiary documents (there are also different mixes, such as 1 secondary and 2 tertiary, etc). However, if you choose to use other documents for proof of identity, then you need not bring your SSN card. Since you don't have one to begin with, this need not be of any concern.

Again, this could all have been found online after a quick search on Google. It blatantly states all that I have said above on their website.

As a side note, I'm actually heading up to Washington soon for a drivers license myself. I'll perhaps inform others of my trip afterward.
