Hey guys....advice/thoughts please.....

I was denied to continue as a dependent in my mom's insurance since I'm not classified as disabled and is not a full-time college student. Problem is I am schedueld in Mayo Clinic--which is a private hospital--for a post-checkup because I had surgery there last January. Do you think I'll have a problem telling them of my status to get financial help? I'm wondering if anyone here has gone through something like it.

Thanks in advance.

If you are able to show financial hardships they are willing to help you. You dont have to tell them youre undocumented. My family has no health insurance whatsoever and my mother was able to get a 2,000 bill waved. She just had to show her pay stubs and that was all. Go talk to the financial counselor and ask them. Good Luck!

wel I don't have any bills because I live with my parents and they might look into why i haven't been having any income, which is also why I don't have a bank account. i was thinking of letting them know of my status to explain my hardship. you think there will be any problems if i do that?

help please!

I dont know too much about health insurance other than I tried getting myself one, but it was 70buks a month and it just wasnt worth it.. I dont go to the doctors often.. just wanted it for check ups and eye doctor appoints (I use contacts) anyways.. Id first tell them your hardship w out letting them know your undocumented.. if they help than great.. if not let them know and I mean its not like they can deport you..i think DX

ahh dudee i wish i could help you out. But I did google healthcare for the uninsured and found this http://covertheuninsured.org/stateguides/. I live in NJ and we have something called charitycare. Back when me and my family recently moved to USA, we applied for charitycare. Many times we got accepted and I managed to get a check up now and than. I feel ya though. I turned 18 and BAM lost coverage from my pops insurance. I say try to do your best to find help concerning your past surgery and exercise, eat your veggies, and drink your milk. Keep that immune system up.

Thanks, that link is something I could look into, although I'm not sure because living in AZ with tough immigration laws may not really give me so much help. I was only worried the hospital would report me to ICE if I tell them of my status. How else can I explain I haven't had a job in recent years? If I hadn't lost my insurance, this would not have been a problem.

blehhh.......

Dreamy14, you should definitely call the financial department at your local hospital or the Mayo Clinic and ask about charity care. Make sure you find out what they require as proof of income, which will probably will be your parents' tax returns. They will also do a credit check on you guys. You can make the call anonymously, if you're afraid that they will report you to ICE.

My parents both applied for charity care when we first arrived in the US. My dad is pretty healthy, but my mom isn't and they were able to help her out. Through charity care, she's had mulitiple procedures and yearly check ups.

Also, if a specialist is needed, they have a list of doctors that offer some of their services for free that they can refer you to. They will put you on a waiting list, though the list can sometimes get pretty long.

You do have to keep applying for the program each year. Last year, the hospital found someone with the same exact name as my mom and that lady happened to have excellent credit and even owned two homes. Long story short, both my parents were denied the help.

If they don't offer charity care at any hospital near you or you are denied help like my parents were, I suggest that you start calling doctors' offices and find one that is willing to help you. Since the denial of financial help, both of my parents needed urgent medical care, and I called every single specialist in town and finally found doctors who were willing to give my parents discount.

Oh, and my mom was referred to an oncologist over five years ago, and even though the hospital no longer helps her pay for her visits, the doctor still sees my mom for free. His office even checks up on her every few months to make sure she's ok.

Good luck. I hope everything works out and don't give up. =)
