You can call and ask amtrak. I asked them about southwest chief route and they told me it was safe.

did you actually tell them you are an undocumented? or you just ask whether they require any identification, like a check point.

Thanks, I never even thought of doing that, what exactly did you ask them?

I would still not ride amtrak, more expensive then flying, it costs me less then $100 from chicago to miami... you just have to know how to find the tickets and when to buy, amtrak however, seems to be a bit more expensive then flying even when purchasing the tickets early.

furthermore, I am not sure I would trust someone from amtrak telling me that there will not be any ICE agents randomly boarding trains somewhere, I have heard of them boarding buses in other parts of florida, so why not amtrak as well... I would not risk it knowing they have boarder amtrak in the past.

this was my e-mail: (Btw I'm not undocumented, I'm US citizen but I hang out here because I am concerned for some of my close friends who are undocumented).

Hi I am planning to travel with Amtrak from Chicago to Los Angeles on Southwest Chief route. On the newspaper I read that Border Patrol shows up in trains and checks people's passports to see if they are legal within 100 miles of the border. When I checked the map I noticed that Southwest Chief doesn't really come close to the border. Should I bring my passport with me or does border patrol not come to Southwest Chief trains since it's more than 100 miles away from the border? Thanks.

And their response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting us.

Border patrol does not effect the Southwest Chief.

I hope this information is helpful.

It's safe, just show ID (as in passport). That's all.

If this email is legit then it should say "Border Patrol does not affect the Southwest Chief."

I doubt they're going to share that sort of information anyway.

I took amtrak from SD to SF and I had no problems.

In LA they said there was going to be a homeland security check and to have ID's and tickets ready but they never did the check, lol. and people i've talked to said school id or any form of valid identification works. so whatevs.
