is it possible for the undocumented to rent an apartment in Indiana?
I talked to an agent in one of the apartment leasing office this morning, they told me that since I don't have a SSN, they are going to need my a copy of passport, I-20 and Visa for the utilities and stuff......
If I let my roomate who is an international student (he has ssn) rent the apartment with 2 bedroom, will that work out?Even though that's unlikely to happen (He doesn't know my status. . .) I would hate to be confront in the leasing office about my I-20 and the absence of visa on the passport...
what can i do...

I bs'ed my SSN when I rented in college. Of course the landlord is not from a company or anything so its likely he gives a crap unless we get into trouble. But we were good kids

dont use an agency an agency checks credit scores. look for local newspapers for apartments for rent and craigslist... local newspapers work best.

More and more regular people check people's credit history so there are two options: either get a Credit Card and start working on your history(which is something I would suggest, since you will need it eventually and if you have money for an apartment you will probably have money for a CC) or say that you are a foreign student or something and you only have an ITIN (which you should get).

If some regular person asks for a copy of your passport just give him a copy of your ID page, if he asks for your visa just look for a different place. Once somebody asks for any, and I mean really mean any, immigration document you can immediately assume that those precautions are in place to prevent undocumented immigrants from renting that place. So don't try to get around it somehow, because if they find out it might hurt you a lot.
