hello fellow dreamers,
I recently applied to phd program at U of MN as an international student (since i can't apply as a us citizen/permanent resident)...I read all over the graduate school threads on this forum but I can't seem to find an answer.

did i make the right decision in applying as an int'l student ? also anyone know anything about u of mn in regards to undoc students?

i guess i'm trying to ask if i want to go to grad school for a phd prgm, what do i have to do to get in??

According to an admissions representative, they accept undocumented students but still charge out-of-state tuition. I'm guessing this was referring to the Undergraduate program, but I'm not quite on sure on the Graduate school. I'm guessing you went to a different University for your undergraduate?

I actually just applied to the U of M in January as an undergrad transfer student and I just checked "Other" as my immigration status. I have not been accepted yet; however, when I log into MyU it takes me to the International student website.

I would directly contact the Graduate school through email if I were you. Good Luck!

I went to one of the UC's in which I'm considered as an AB540 student. Under "visa type" I put none rather than other so I'm not sure how that will be affected. When I go to MyU I also get put in as International student...

how would I direct this issue to the graduate school office??

I wonder if we can get paid as an intl student?? since grad students get paid for their degree through TA or RA

Dreamiee, keep us updated! I'll be sending my graduate school applications either next semester or next year.

What program are you applying for?

Typically, those moneys, ESPECIALLY from state universities, can only be awarded to those who can work legally. Even private schools are icky about that in my experience.

Does that include private fellowships? I understand not being eligible for RA and TA assistant-ships due to work requirements, but what about eligibility for fellowship offers of no tuition + stipend?

Also, to the OP, I recommend trying a private school. Funding is next to impossible to find at public institutions.

Grad school (phd) is a little hazy since not many undocumented students go down that path.

Yes.

I would recommend that you try to apply to a major private school since they can offer a private fellowship from their endowment.

I think it is good to apply to both. The private school I applied to and got in only offered a small scholarship and the state school ended up being cheaper (and a way better program)
