Hello all,

Just inquiring about something....sometimes when i ride the subway in nyc i see cops asking kids to see ID or something...this has never happened to me, the most that happens is if they check your bag or something then let you go...but anyone ever been in this situation? When they want to see ID? what is the protocol you followed? did anything extreme happen? were you doing something wrong or was it random? how recent was it?

Answers should probably be helpful to all that commute over the boroughs.

Ive lived in NYC all my life. The only reason they ask for ID's is because they want to make sure the metropass they are using (which school provides for free for transit) is being used by students and not adults who might be misusing it to go to work.

Other then that, NYPD officers are the friendliest bunch of cops on this planet. With 80% of NYC immigrants they show a lot of tolerance and arent signed with the controversial 287-g program.

Dont worry about deportation 1 bit.

Don't worry about that stuff if you live in NYC. That is New York CITY! Upstate New York is a total different experience, places like Buffalo, NY are actually some of the worst places to set foot in as an immigrant of any status.

NYC cops don't give immigrants a harder time than they give anyone else in the city, but they are still cops. If you go off announcing your illegal or tell them you don't have a social they will obviously be alarmed (trust me you don't want to tell any cop, anywhere that you don't have a social) . As long as you go about your business, cops don't ask for ID. If you get a ticket for littering or any minor things like staying in a park after closing hours, then you'll be asked for an ID but it's only to make sure you don't have a warrant on your name. So sit back and relax, NYC is one of our havens. =)
