U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar, R-Ind., shares the concerns of local activists who want changes in the nation's immigration law to make it easier for non-citizens living in the United States without a valid visa.
But he ranks among the nation's congressmen who agree that it will be impossible this year to pass a comprehensive reform bill.

Lugar spokesman Andy Fisher said the senator is cooperating with Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., on the DREAM Act, a measure meant to make it easier for non-citizens to attend college in the United States, which would allow those young people with immigration issues to continue their educations.

"(Lugar) has indicated that there are two or three areas where we might be able to offer some help to people who now face problems" because of their immigration status, Fisher said.

Fisher said Lugar does not believe anything will happen because of election year politics on Capitol Hill.
"If the debate is likely to reach no concurrence on the issue, the senator thinks we should focus on issues where we can agree," Fisher said.

He may not believe it can pass this year, but he can help to prove people wrong.

This thing about it "not looking good this year" is not some arbitrary destiny. It can be changed if only people would be willing to cooperate.

I like your thinking and as much as I would love the DREAM Act to pass, I have my doubts. The fact of the matter is the immigration system is broken. You've heard everyone say it, even our dearest President Obama, because of that passing the DREAM Act would only benefit those who lie between a specific age range and either join the military or attend college. Thus, such legislation would not fix the overall immigration system but only a small section which, as a matter of fact, wouldn't even be considered a "fix."

But wouldn't it be a start?

A start to fixing the broken immigration system? That is far from a start.

Dream Act isn't meant to reform the immigration system -it is specifically aimed at a particular group of beneficiaries, and I see no difference between it and similar programs like the TPS program that was just extended for individuals that were affected by a natural disaster 13 years ago!

They can talk about the need to fix the broken immigration system all they want, but as long as they don't have the 60 votes needed, there is nothing they can do about it. This all or nothing strategy from the pro-immigrant crowd has really been hurting us for a while. We should learn to be realistic and pick the battles we can actually win.

Is that really being realistic? Nope. They should be debating the issue and compromising on legislation.

Look, if they go about it your way then the DREAM Act wouldn't stand a chance because, like you said, we don't have the votes and therefore they can't do anything about it.
