TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Charlie Crist, who's running an independent campaign for Senate, says providing illegal immigrants a path to citizenship will help keep Social Security solvent.

Crist said Thursday that there are as many as 14 million illegal immigrants in the country as part of an underground economy. If they paid into the Social Security system, it would help increase the worker-to-retiree ratio.

The idea would be to provide a path to citizenship similar to a failed proposal put forward by President George W. Bush, former Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Likely Republican nominee Marco Rubio suggested raising the eligibility age for benefits beginning with people under age 55.

Crist and Democratic front-runner Kendrick Meek oppose the idea.

he was a republican.. does this means we have one more in our team?"?

not as far as the senate goes. He's Florida's governor right now. He's running for a senate seat as an independant.

Only mods can delete threads, so that's that.

And nobody on God's green earth knows when/if DA will make it to the senate floor.
