I worked at a motor-neuroscience laboratory as a volunteer. I just blatantly told the laboratory coordinator that I'm undocumented. Of course she talked to me about my issue, but at the end of the day, she didn't seem to care. Although I had to just deal directly with the professor who owned the lab, I think you should just be honest.

I don't think her story about the student getting kicked out has any relevance to your situation; recall that you're not actually a student at that university. I'm guessing she's talking about an international student who forgot to renew his student visa or something...

If I were you, I'd be honest and make it clear what your situation is. Also reinforce the idea that you're just a volunteer who is not a student. Insitutions of higher learning are usually sympathetic to people in our situation anyways! However, it's all up to you... I applied directly from the professor (I approached her and asked for a position) and she got me an ID card and had my identity approved to open the lab anytime, so it was all good since she handled it I guess.. Perhaps you can also speak to the laboratory owner whom you will be working under?

괜찮아!~ 스트레스를 너무 많이하지 마!!!!!!!!!!!!

Institutions of higher learning are NOT all the time sympathetic to people in our situation. I remember having sort of the same predicament back when I was studding at a local community college. They asked to see my visa and when I brought it to them they put me on hold (for registration purposes) until 2099. Now, I read almost everything in these forums however, I don't write much. But in a situation like this I decided to let u know what happened to me so that it doesn't happen to you. So please be very careful and really think about what you are going to do. Also as an idea I'd call as if I was another undocumented volunteer, or have a friend do so so that u know what are the probable outcomes of you coming out to that lady. Best of luck.

I guess I was a bit too general, but most NY/MA/CA 4 year institutions are sympathetic. As for accepting applications as students, some of them auto-reject undocumented immigrant students out of fear or policy. However, it doesn't mean that they're not sympathetic. Which university are you planning on interning at, Sun Hye?

Hmm, I volunteered in a Cancer lab as an undergrad (in CA) but I was never asked for any type of Visa. I was a student though so maybe it was different. I think it is best to tell the person in charge the truth and see where you can go from there. If it doesn't work out then try other schools?

Best of Luck

To the OP. Don't know what to tell you to help your situation... But I've been in that boat also when applying to volunteer jobs.. they basically told me to wait until I got my status adjusted "( Sucks.. I really wanted to volunteer at Ronald Regan Medical Center..

Oooo, and I went to donate blood once, and when asked for a SSN I said, "I don't have one".. The lady laughed and said, "Everyone has one" -.-

The thing is that I already began working at the lab... I have not made any major mistakes and my PI seems to like me... Although she's the one who is putting me through all this in the first place, I hope she would talk to the school administration office and let me stay...

BTW...Did you get to donate your blood?
Well..since you're already working there maybe you can just tell them the truth.. They shouldn't have excepted you without going through the proper steps.. Good luck!

And yes, they let me donate.. (we may not all have socials, but we all have blood)
