After my parents recent divorce I'm having trouble getting them to pay my college tuition, which runs at about 5k a year. I'm currently enrolled at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY) and I have a 3.67 GPA. I've been looking everywhere for a scholarship or something that I could sign up for. I know it's possible to sign up for these things even though I have no social security. If anyone has any information on which scholarships are worth taking a look at, please let me know.

Hi, I am also a CUNY student, am also an undocumented.
Yes, there are many scholarships out there that you can apply, as long as they do not require SS on their application forms.

I have applied several, and none of them required any. However, if the scholarships were given or supported by the US government, dreamers cannot receive them. I was offered a scholarship $10k but got turned down because the money came from the US government. It was not stated in the scholarship description.

Another thing to notice is that, in my case, when I entered City, I was offered two scholarships already. The admission office staff who I knew very well (I spoke to her several times about my immigration status) told me I would not benefit from any other scholarship. From my interreption, what she meant was campus-based scholarship.

If you were offered a private scholarship that was neither campus-based, and nor it required to be documented, you should apply.

We have a business idea competition, and three prizes are pay in cash.

Avoid any scholarship that require to process through your bursar (student finance account) office.

We undocumented students cannot take money out of the CUNY student account if the scholarships are CUNY-based.

Other restrictions are, for example, undocumented students will not get paid for participating a research program (I am an engineering student). We cannot go work-study either.

Scholarships deadline are usually December or before April. These are usually the big scholarships. My best advice is to get a part time job, and cut down the amount of classes this year, until you figure out a solution. I am sorry to hear about this.

By the way, did you get the Peter F. Vallone Scholarship from the NYC Council upon your freshamn entrance?

Tough luck, Pedrotto. I go to Baruch, and I pay the full $5k a year. I haven't found any scholarships that will help me yet, but I should look into this also for the fall. A few things I learned from the past few years of school are:

1. Take as many classes as you can during fall/spring. I believe that the price remains constant up until 18 or 21 credits so if you can handle the extra classes, you might end up graduating a semester early.
2. Take advantage of the summer and work full time so you can take it a little easier during the school semester.
3. Cut down your expenses. Don't eat out 2x a day for 5 days a week. It makes a serious dent.
4. Deferrals/Payment plans. The school allows you to defer half the payment to a later date and won't drop your classes if you're late with the second half of the payment. Of course, you won't be allowed to register for new classes until you're all paid up. Salliemae has a payment plan -- they split it up into 4 payments instead of 2 so that might be easier on your wallet.

OK these might sound like common sense, but totally easier said than done. Its a tough life, but at least we don't have to pay international student fees.

CSI, Hunter, Lehmann, Baruch, City, Queens, and Brooklyn.

Check with your home college to see if there are merit scholarships available.
Hunter has a few that come from private donors.
