I am about to apply for a volunteer position this summer but the application requires my information to do a background check and there is the spot where it asks me for my social... I was wondering if I could possibly use my tax ID number and put it there? Or can i just leave it blank??

Just leave it blank. If they ask for more, give them your ITIN. Is this a private or government funded institution?

A place like a hospital would most likely still want you to volunteer if you don't have a social. This will also greatly improve their image of illegal immigrants if they see how you want to give back to your community as well.

Exactly, thanks! I used to volunteer there during high school also but I was a minor back then so now that I'm considered an adult they ask for a background check. :/

I guess it depends where you're from. My local hospital wanted a proof of being here legally after I had done all the paperwork and medical tests needed.

Back to the OP, your ITIN should work just fine.
