For 10 days, a group of illegal immigrants had staged a round-the-clock hunger strike in front of the building in Midtown Manhattan that houses Senator Charles E. Schumer’s office, calling on him to take immediate action on a bill that would provide a path to citizenship for young illegal immigrants.

But on Thursday, after several of them had grown weary or ill, they brought the protest to a dramatic close, staging a “die-in” in front of the building and sit-ins in Mr. Schumer’s offices in Washington and Melville, N.Y.

I guess that was the escalation they were talking about...

So the hunger strike has ended indefinitely? Then there is no immediate pressure for the DA right now..

Its not. We knew that they wont let us in the building in NYC. So last night the strikers split up and went for civil disobedience in his DC and Long Island offices. =)

The NYC action was in solidarity with what is happening in DC and Long Island.

Long Island folk were arrested at a sit in and released right away.

DC are still in his office... hopefully, the media will tell the story in the following days.

The turn out in NYC was good! Thanks to everyone who came around!

He did find ten minutes of his time to come tell us that what we’re doing is frustrating for him,” said Yadira Alvarez, a 2010 Columbia grad and hunger striker, who said Schumer told the protesters he can’t move the bill without five more co-sponsors in the Senate.
He should go out and get them then; thats still his job as a senator. We know from speaking to other legislators that he hasn't even tried. If he can't find five more supporters for the Dream Act, why should we expect him to ever find the support necessary for CIR, which still has zero republicans who are willing to back it.

Sen. Schumer is pursuing a failed strategy of all or nothing. Our actions are our way of letting him know that is time to refocus and give the immigrant community something tangible.

Is that so? Would you be able to expand a little more on that?

Because this whole time we've all been thinking that he's been asking other senators for support, after all "he has been working on a bill." I really thought he asked but the stingy republicans and conservative democrats refused, or were not too responsive.

Oh my heart breaks when I read these comments. I would think that the NYtimes has a more open-minded and liberal readership, but I am sorely disappointed as about half of the comments are "laws are laws" comments.
