Activists across the country have rallied around the DREAM Act as a first step toward comprehensive immigration reform. The DREAM Act, which broadens undocumented youths' access to higher education, basically granting conditional relief to enable students to finish their degrees, is framed as a "noncontroversial" concept that rational people, even conservative-leaning folks, would find hard to oppose on moral grounds. In fact, even the Pentagon is a big fan, according to a documentary recently featured on Democracy Now!. Really.

In Yo Soy El Army, media activist Marco Amador looks at the backstory behind the DREAM Act in his exploration of the Pentagon's predation on Latino communities. While the DREAM Act has inspired bold activism led by educators and students, its status as a pillar of the immigration reform movement is somewhat undercut, the film suggests, by the taint of the military recruitment machine. Specifically, the bill contains a provision that offers military service as an option, alongside higher education, as a "path to citizenship."

Yo Soy El Army: US Military Targets Latinos with Extensive Recruitment Campaign
In addition to the racial profiling encouraged by Arizona’s controversial anti-immigrant law, the Hispanic community in this country is the target of a different kind of profiling, as well: the military’s targeting of Latino recruits. We get a report from independent media activist and community organizer Marco Amador of Producciones Cimarrón and the Center for Community Communications and the Big Noise media collective.

I am pretty sure most dreamers don't give a damn about these complaints.

I am getting really sick of these left fringe attempts to derail DREAM.

To anybody who buys into this, you ought to recognize that CIR has no chance this year, not because people here don't want it, but because the politicians don't. When you dredge up these false arguments, you only make people here have to live in limbo longer and are doing the same thing from the left that the right wingers do when they complain about the supposed need "to secure the border."

Because they know better than DREAMers do and, hey, it's no skin off their backs if DREAMers have to wait another year, or two, or five...

Hey, if you're dumb enough to be sucked by the Army's advertisement's campaigns, you shouldn't have anyone to blame but yourself.

Dumb enough? theres a lot of us who want to join the Military i have met a lot of people who are just waitin for the DREAM act so they can be eligible to join, i am one of those people. I have my 2 Year associates degree but i feel like College is not what i want for now, i want to serve in the Marines and will as soon as the act passes. its not about being dumb and buying into the military's advertisements, its a choice that people make. the only dumb people are the one's that join the Military not knowing what they are getting themeselves into. i know i could die at any second, but that is a risk i am willing to take and so does every Man and Woman who join the Military. sorry bro not trying to call you out or anything, im just sayin, if people choose to go to College thats perfect but the ones who think the Military is a better fit for them, then that doesnt make them dumb...

I guess even having rephrased that statement, it still struck a nerve. I was merely pointing out how silly the army advertisements usually are and the army expects people to fall for them (thus bein conned into the army that way really takes someone rather naive). Like you say: "the only dumb people are the one's that join the Military not knowing what they are getting themeselves into." Nothing wrong w/joining, it's great pay; but it's a decision that shouldn't be taken lightly.

c'mon even you've got to admit the commercials are kind of shitty.
