You know, I really admire the people on the front lines who are fighting and risking it all to go out there and make an impact.

I really support this. But the communication needs to improve between the legislators and the activists.

A lot of legislators are saying the same thing- that the protesters are not going about it the right way, and their methods are not profitable. Ie, the risks they are taking, the way and the reason they are taking these risks will not bring about sufficient reward. Yes, it will bring some reward- it will bring attention to our plight, but that's not enough.

I actually agree with Gutierrez on this. We need to aim to bigger, but most importantly aim smarter. What aiming smarter means is that achieving a lot of positive outcome with minimum effort.

The activists in this video are very passionate and motivated and heartfelt. But they need to aim smarter, in order to make a deeper, wider impact. Right now, they aren't getting through to the legislators, and frankly, the legislators seem annoyed.

If I could suggest anything specific improvement, it would be:

1) Don't speak from the heart, speak from the paper.

What this means: Everybody interprets the situation differently. All the DREAMers in the video have their own arguments, their own thoughts and feelings. It's like a shotgun, spraying a number of pellets, but they are not moving all at the same time in the exact same direction.

Just bombarding legislators with pellets is not going to penetrate. Penetration requires one message, repeated over and over again.

The message needs to be relevant to Gutierrez, or any senator who is moving in this direction. But this message is not relevant, so you can hear the two sides arguing here, trying to find a common solution. This also happened with all the other senators.

We need to UNDERSTAND the legislator, UNDERSTAND what he wants, UNDERSTAND his goals and the methods he wants to use. And then we need to shape our response accordingly.

To make a battle analogy- if we understand our opponent, we will know how he fights, we will know his strong and weak points, and we can take advantage of that knowledge- we won't try to connect on areas where he's armored, we will try to connect where he is vulnerable and open to influence.

How do we do this with Gutierrez, based on this video?
- Communicate precisely:

Don't say "We're tired of waiting." - He knows that already, that's why he supports DREAM ACT within CIR.

Instead, say "We are worried that CIR might never get enough support. If DA is packaged within CIR, DA might go down as well, and our lives will be lost."

This hits Gutierrez where it's relevant. Because he already supports the dream act.

2) Realize who is your ally and who is your opponent.

One thing that really crushed my heart in this video is that Gutierrez is on our side, yet the DREAMers here are bitching at him as if he's their enemy. Even the title of the video portrays him as if he's disappointed us.

DON'T DO THIS!

He's on our side! He wants to pass DA! The only area of disagreement is HOW he wants to pass DA.

Focus on that! Don't bitch at him! You think when that phone call ended he felt good about DREAMers, or did he feel like "I'm trying to help these guys and they are bitching at me, whining and complaining."

I'm not saying this to criticize these guys. I'm all for them, I support them 100%. I just want them to move in a way that is effective and makes progress instead of turning legislators off and coming across like bitchy, whiny complainers.

Come on, guys! I love you, and I want you to polish your communication to make the best impact!

Yeah if we unite as a community and get the same message out maybe they will listen instead of individual groups getting arrested and getting frowned upon by the politicians.

I love reading your posts Invictus. It's very concise and straightforward. This situation has made me taciturn so its nice reading material from someone likeminded.

arthur- Yes. We need to realize that everybody has different objections.

Some people support DA, others don't. Some people want to pass DA separately, others find it more profitable to pass DA within CIR.

Some haters object because they perceive injustice. Others for racist reasons, others for economic arguments. Some, like Gutierrez might have political reasons (he might think that if Dream Act fails, then Republicans will gain motivation to kill CIR, knowing that CIR has much less support).

We need to shape our communication according to the audience, and according to their feelings.

Abaddon: Will let you know.

One thing is for certain. If they make the DA a standalone, it will pass, but at the cost of cir never passing. It's just a bad way to bargain. Let's say that DA passs as a standalone and some of us still fight for the cir, that will be very difficult because they'll just be like, "oh, we just passed da but they still want more? Ain't gonna happen!" I know that many of us, myself included, are tired of waiting but that's the reality. Now that being said, I just want the DA to pass at this point. They'll eventually have to stop the blindfold and pass the cir long way down the road (like the healthcare).
