Lady GaGa played a concert in Arizona last weekend despite pressure to cancel the date in protest at the state's controversial new immigration laws.

The 'Alejandro' singer, who is currently on the second US leg of her 'Monster Ball' tour, said that she received phone calls from other artists to scrap the gig and join their campaign against the law known as SB 1070, which gives police powers to arrest anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant.

GaGa refused to cancel the date, instead using it to raise awareness of the bill.

She is quoted as saying at the gig: "I got a call from some big rappers and big rockers. They said, 'We'd like you to boycott Arizona because of SB 1070'.

"I told them, 'Do you really think that... popstars are going to shut down the state?' You really think us dumb f**king popstars are gonna collapse the economy in Arizona? I'll tell you what we have to do about SB 1070. We have to be active. We have to actively protest.

"I will not cancel my show. I will hold you, and we will hold each other, and we will protest this state. Do not be afraid. Because if it wasn't for all of you immigrants, this country wouldn't have s**t. And I mean it. I mean it so deeply in my soul."

GaGa also took to Twitter, writing: "The Monsterball is by nature a protest: A youth church experience to speak out and celebrate against all forms of discrimination + prejudice.

"Tonight we will continue to actively protest social and political injustices in Arizona. We will sing, we will stand up, + we will be heard."
