That sucks for them... I'm going back to Uruguay and the government lets you take everything back tax-free (with a few exceptions)

I think that's roughly common, the problem is that they're not making an exception to their own citizens going back home.

The problem is that the mexican government doesn't know these people are returning w/their belongings and could easily be mistaken as falluqueros. In other words, there are thousands upon thousands of people who resell used goods in Mexico for a profit and those goods are subject to an import tax. I am unaware whether or not the Mexican government has any special program for ppl/in their situation and that may unfortunately not be the case.

Too bad, they could just go through the ''undeclared'' line and grease one of the aduaneros for 50$.

so either the family is uninformed or there's a quota of value on the goods allowed.
