The message behind a short-lived but highly publicized ad was clear: Latinos, stay home.

Voter suppression isn’t usually marketed as voter empowerment. But in the ad by Latinos for Reform, an independent campaigning group led by career conservative Robert de Posada, the paradox was presented as plain sense: Because the Democrats haven’t delivered on immigration, exercise your right to vote by not doing so.

It’s advice that, if followed in Nevada, would all but assuredly play to the benefit of the GOP, which has seen Hispanics move away from the Republican Party as they grow in the state electorate..

This is the most awful and absurd idea I've ever heard. It would make it that much easier for Republican'ts to win. If that happens, we can say good-bye to DREAM and CIR for sure. Grrrrrr I can't believe the geniuses behind this are 'Latinos for Reform'.

I hope I'm seeing this all wrong, so please, someone...anyone... enlighten me? So I can see how this is a good idea?

The point is basically to have a low Latino turnout, especially in places like Nevada where republicans have been spewing alot of the right wing hatred towards immigrants which conflicts with the Latino population, so instead of retrieving their rhetoric they're playing the whole "enthusiasm gap" strategy. Targeting Latino disillusionment with the democrats and advising them not to vote at all. So you can expect more of this but in subtler tones for the next couple of weeks until election.

Lets get real. If there are no republicans to support immigration reform and DREAM act it will not happen in the next session of congress.

This is republican's latest attempt to defeat Senator Reid and Senator Boxer.
Watch this and you will know who is really behind this ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ5vyEg6Ybs .

But i think Latino community/ and or people who support immigration reform should look at the bigger picture. lets say CIR does not pass by 2012, but then in 2012 democrats have a come back and gain a lot in both senate and house.

Then wouldn't it suck because of 1 or 2 vote it doesn't pass again? And imagine if those 2 votes were senator Boxer and Senator Reid.

Also this is a bad idea because if they don't vote, their voices will not be heard. Republicans need Latino votes for 2012's presidential election. The more they vote, the bigger block of voters they become, the more influence they will become.

You mean if the last vote depended on the senator elected in the nevada election between boxer and reid. But yeah, thanks for posting the youtube vid Bluestar, I was a bit worried at the beginning that it would go a different direction but it was certainly nice to see the sorry excuse for a latino get grilled on a t.v. interview.

The person behind the don't vote ads is a conservative that has worked for the NRC, there is no reason that he should be telling latinos not to vote for democrats because their attempts did not go to fruition on immigration reform when the mind behind the ads never even voted for them.

He tries to cover his ass saying that the spanish version of the ad is targeting republicans, but what is not mentioned which is shown in the news article linked by AL, is that Univision is not even going to run their ads, so what's the point of saying anything about that ad if it will not even be seen by most of the spanish speaking media. Latino's are voting largely democratic and for good reason, republicans are not going to support our cause, in most elections it feels as if we end up selecting the lesser of two evils, well in this case the lesser are democrats and by a very wide margin.

lol people will be stupid enough to follow their advice. Just like there will be latinos who will vote for GOP candidates because of their name just like Minorities voted for Obama because of his skin. Not saying they all did, but lets face it, if anyone think all of Obama's votes were because of his merits, think again.
