I overstayed my tourist visa, and in around two months I will be turning 19, so I can get the 3 year ban waived if I get a voluntary departure and leave before I turn 19. Then, I will be able to apply for an F1 visa, and since I am currently attending a school that knows Im undocumented and gives me sufficient aid, I will have the F1 finances part down.

The problem: how the heck do I get a voluntary departure? Will the process take a long time?

I agree with iDream on consulting with a lawyer. Please make sure you talk to at least one lawyer, if not a few. Here is a list of recommended lawyer from immigrate2us.net. Some of those offer the first consultation free of charge.Lizz Cannon is my lawyer, and I know for a fact that she does phone/email consultations for free.

About voluntary departure, I'm pretty sure you have to put yourself in removal proceedings first. Then, you have to hope that you will be granted voluntary departure instead of being deported. Voluntary departure is not something you want on your record anyway. There is no need for you to do that. If you really want to leave, just do so on your own. You'll need proof of departure when you apply to come back (ie. stamped passport, plane ticket..)

Best of luck.
