HATCH ON SENATE CONSIDERATION OF DREAM ACT, OTHER PARTISAN PROPOSALS
Utah Senator Says What We Need is Real Action to Get Economy Moving, Get American People Back to Work

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) issued the following statement opposing consideration of the DREAM Act and other partisan proposals before the Senate:

“The American people sent us a clear message on November 2nd to focus on getting our economy moving again. Instead of listening, the majority in the Senate is full speed ahead with legislation that won’t become law in order to curry favor with political constituencies. Jamming these bills through during a lame duck session of Congress when we haven’t yet acted to prevent one of the largest tax increases in history is not how Utahns want Congress to operate. It’s time to stop the politically-motivated show votes, and focus on our economy and getting the American people back to work.

“When it comes to immigration, our primary focus must remain on regaining the American people’s trust by fully securing our borders that are threatened by emboldened and violent gangs, and fixing our broken immigration system. Traveling across Utah, the people I represent have told me that’s what we need to focus on, and that’s precisely what I plan on doing.”

NOTE: Last week, Hatch and all 42 Republican Senators sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) outlining their opposition to proceeding to any legislation in the lame duck session of Congress until Congress acts to stop the looming tax hikes set to hit almost every American on January 1st.

The DREAM Act is a bipartisan legislation ‒ pioneered by Sen. Orin Hatch [R-UT] and Sen. Richard Durbin [D-IL] ‒ that can solve this hemorrhaging injustice in our society. Under the rigorous provisions of the DREAM Act, qualifying undocumented youth would be eligible for a 6 year long conditional path to citizenship that requires completion of a college degree or two years of military service.
