Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain says he favors dealing with illegal immigrants already in the country before addressing the issue of immigration reform.

The Arizona Republican, who has long been an advocate for border security and tougher laws on undocumented immigrants, made the comment on Wednesday.

“Once we get the border secured — and we can get the border secured — I would look forward to working on comprehensive immigration reform,” Mr. McCain said.

Mr. McCain, who campaigned against President Obama’s immigration proposals, said he opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants, noting the need to “close the borders” before considering immigration reform policies.

Mr. McCain explained his vote against the DREAM Act, saying the two parties have ” philosophical differences.”

The comments come in the midst of a number of Republican Congressmen offering immigration reform proposals. Iowa Rep. Steve King says he will propose a bill aimed at targeting illegal immigrants and a path towards citizenship

Well we can expect something more draconian than the 1996 policy aimed at future undocumented. However, in all honesty as long as I get my papers I don't care (yes, I know very republican of me) what enforcement provisions they will add to the bill.

Forgive me for being realistic but the catch is "once we get the border secured." McCain is trying to catch two birds with one stone, giving Hispanics false hope by advocating for immigratio reform (thus Hispanics would support him) & giving anti-immigrants what they want: no CIR or Dream Act. I hope you don't get your hopes up too high.

He has no need for Latino support anymore, though. He has the seat for the next 6yrs and he's not looking for a Presidential run again. So what can his angle be? Just to sound good?

Eff that man, He's not going to do a thing for immigration reform. He's a coward of a senator and I feel bad for the people of Arizona and will pray everyday to God thanking him that Senator McCain is not our President.

I respect everyone and everything. I am very open minded but fuck all of these motherfuckers who look out for themselves first! I hate walking and talking bullshit without a firm base! Sometimes I really wish these dirty motherfuckers would have never came from Europe...
