You are not eligible for FAFSA and are not supposed to apply for it. Do not continue any further. That could cause you legal problems in the future.

The SSA only verifies that the SSN is valid, not a persons legal status.

If you file online, it asks you if you're a US citizen, eligible noncitizen, or neither. Just choose "I am not a citizen or eligible noncitizen."

I think some schools require you to apply for FAFSA. You can file for FAFSA, but you cannot receive any federal aid. If you are offered federal aid, DO NOT accept it.

If a school requires you to fill out FAFSA, you fill out the paper one just for their records because if you fill out FAFSA and submit, it can and has in the past, led to legal complications. The head of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund is friends with someone I know and he told her to tell me to under no circumstances fill out and submit FAFSA. It has, in the past, been forwarded to ICE and student HAVE been deported because of it.

So while it may not happen every single time, is it really a chance you're willing to take? If the school requires you to fill out FAFSA, tell them your situation and ask if you can submit a paper version just for their records.
