**UTAH guest worker program thread**

They just passed a guest worker program in UT!

Anybody know a way to get this or where to go? I'm thinking of moving there in a few weeks... Maybe some of you are from there or you're planning to move there.

Anything to share? Opinions??

If having a guest worker permit meant you can work anywhere you wish, then Utah would be the ideal place to move. We could all live a normal life by holding a job and driving a car using a Utah driving privilege card.

I read something different though... I was reading this bill HB 116.

And this NYT article, from what I read, seems to say that there are two guest worker programs. One with Mexico, and another one that will apply to anyone who arrived Utah before May 10, 2011.

I think you are right.

I guess there might be two programs, but this just sounds too good to be true. There is probably a catch.

1) Is that permit valid to work anywhere? Let's say you are just a student in college, who wants to get a part-time job so can you apply for a job a Domino's? Or let's say you have an engineering degree, then can you work at an engineering firm?

2) Who will be willing to hire people with these permits? HB 116 states that an employer has to verify the validity of the permit, in other words, the employer is knowingly hiring an undocumented person.

If we can work anywhere and drive, then we should all move to Utah before May 11. Sounds like the normal life we have all been longing for.

The Utah driving privilege is not valid outside Utah, so it's useless unless you plan to live there. And yes, having a driving privilege directly implies you are undocumented.

How does this work for Overstays who do have a social security card.

The way Mrs. Robles was explaining it. It will make it really hard for undocumented immigrants without jobs in Utah but those with jobs will get a compromise card. This card let's you work as long as you comply with the requirements. Those requirements are English classes, a job and not getting charge criminally. Now if you are planning on moving there well then good luck because I think the program will not help you and the other laws will make you life harder that in Arizona. For one they will want to see that you have lived in Utah for at least two years and that you where employed. This is a great program but it will only benefit the immigrants in Utah nationally this does not change anything.

P.S. This law has to get a federal waiver that Obama will not give. Now if Mitt Romney does win the 2012 election Utah is almost assured it's waiver. That's why the law gives the governor until 2013 to get that waiver.
