When I read a DA story it seems that the majority of children in said stories, are placed in advanced classes or they skip a grade. I've also read it in the comments posted on this forum.

So I'm wondering, how many of you have been placed in honors/advanced/ skipped a grade. Do you think keeping a secret this big and the persuasion of your parents/guardians/family pushed you to concentrate on school or has it been the opposite? Has the pressure been too much that you dropped out or/and got involved with the wrong people?

P.S I <3 polls lol

I chose other. My school district would place students that came from other countries a year back regardless of skill, my teacher would tell me that I could easily be in fifth when I was in second, so it was extraordinarily easy for me to pass the classes, and as a result once I got out of ESOL I was automatically placed into gifted classes. Went to a magnet program in middle school and high school, in high school almost exclusively took honors and AP classes with duel enrollment and internships by the last couple years of high school.

I think being in such a hard working family, and having worked from such a young age just instilled a hard working attitude. Than again, I did not have any of the distractors most people had. No cable, not any kind of decent gaming system, not even a decent internet connection, and sometimes I feel as if the lack of all of that also ensured greater isolation whereby studying was actually something to do.

Though I also observe how easy it is to just give up on everything and drop out, specially when there are many doors that shut down towards furthering education around you and the media keeps on showing stories about how people are unable to go to college because of status. I can't imagine the harm this is doing to dreamers in my school district in Florida with all the issues arising, and certainly it seems as if people are going to be less likely to come out to the appropriate resources for fear of getting caught and thus will never learn that there is actually a way of furthering their education and just give up. I fear those great stories of going against all odds may become rare in states that are taking a harsher stance on immigration matters and targeting public schools students from an early age.

Gifted, Advanced, and AP classes. Didn't find out about status till beginning of Junior year and that on top of family drama and poor health it depressed me to the point of missing half of my last two years of school and severely slacking in grades. Pretty much cost me graduating in the top ten but I still made it out with A's and B's so I guess it could have been a lot worse. The better news is that I got healthy and although could only afford one semester in community, made all A's again. So much has happened since I found out and the dust is only just beginning to settle, but things are getting better. I still wish I could go to school though, hopefully I've just got to wait a little longer.

I was top student until I found out about my situation. It was such a steady decline too! Went from straight As to some Bs to a few Cs and finally my first D. If I found out a year sooner I probably would've failed a couple classes

Honorw and Regular. When i found out in High School, I really didn’t pay no mind on my status until I hit Junior year and found out i couldn’t get financial aid to go to college, i went from wanting to attend a UC or Cal State ( i live in Cali) to just Community College. I felt bad because I felt like a belonged in an university instead, i worked so hard in High School to just end up in CC. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong attending a CC, but maybe i wouldn’t have stressed so much in school trying to get all the classes required for university entry, I also didn’t have anyone to mentor me and tell me i could get scholarships n such to help me pay my way to college, i just wanted to do everything on my own.
In the end, I did pretty well my first yr in college, got discourage through financial obstacles and my social life, slacked -off by taking fewer classes. My mentally was "Why rush in to graduating when I wont be able to work after!" BAD BAD BAD! I regret it now... I would have graduated by now if I hadn't dropped-out.
Now I made my life even more difficult, got engaged, had 2 kids (age now 3 and 21 month old), separated from the father (douche thought I wanted to marry him just so I can get my papers and then divorce him, so I left him). Now I’m a single mother, working as a secretary for a Fencing Co., thank goodness I at least have a job, and now getting ready to go back to school in the fall. I am determined to finish school and become a Neonatal Nurse, no matter how hard it will get, it might take me a while but I owe it to myself and my kids.

Damn your story sounds so much like mine. I knew I was undocumented but it all hit me when I was a junior. After taking the SAT's , AP stats, english, Calculus and American History I felt like shit so I didn't even bother going to the AP classes since they didn't count towards graduation. I ended up smoking tons of pot and I placed in the top 10% of my class. When I had my appointment with the counselor for college aspirations, she just said that there was nothing she could do and that I should try to take out a loan. Luckily I got accepted into Pace University but I dropped out because I couldn't handle the course work + work + being engaged + my mom's heart attack. sigh.... Anyway, I chose to become a baker/patissier and I'm gonna be off to SFBI next summer to get certified to make it official. *I graduated HS 6? 7 ? years ago?!

I could have skipped a grade twice but chose not to. I did however have honor classes and AP classes all throughout high school. Four years later and all of my friends are like WTFDUDE SERIOUSLY?! I failed
